I believe at least a couple modders are already on it.

Well your entitled to your opinion but I am glad they didnt go for a campaign and put everything into skirmish / multiplay. What good is a heavily scripted campaign. and then have rubbish skirmish so no replay value.

Unfortunately I am a big fan of campaigns. Not so much for the replay value, but more for the depth they add to the lore. So often nowadays games start out with a single page of "threatening armies/aliens/gods/whatever are approaching", and then the campaign plays you through the event. So provided the manual has a hefty lore section I will be happy I guess. If having a skirmish map that lasts longer than most other entire games doesn't make me empathize with my faction I guess nothing will.

And as I said, a good manual helps a bunch with lore depth. I think Homeworld had one of my favorite manuals ever, it was far more informative than the campaign.

It's hard to imagine a campaign working in this type of setting, particularly when the idea is for you to fight on a large scale strategic level. Unlike a game such as C&C where you are confined to a single/small map. The developers would essentially be holding your hand and leading you on. That would seem kinda of awkward. And if they weren't holding your hand (linear gameplay), you'd essentially be doing the same thing as in Skirmish mode, except with a story in the background. This game is more akin to something like GC 2 or RTW, where events happen, but you're essentially creating your own story.

I think 'story scenarios' would be better than campaigns. Some scripted events, some talking heads, some voice acting. Weee

The ability to make a campaign will depend largely on how expansive the Forge Tools will be. But I can pretty much guarantee that if it's possible, people will make them :P

I could care less if it was in campaign format, but you can't say some ancient alien race is running from something big and scary and then we never find out what it is, which is what this is looking like.

Nah, Blair said they already had story-telling plans, so I really doubt that we'll never find out what it is. They just wanted to get the core of the game perfect, which is pretty understandable since that's what's going to give the game its longevity ;)

i could care less for a story, i never play through the singleplayer in any games these days...i for one am very happy everything has been put into the skirmish mode, it represents a shift in game development, since obviously the only drawback to multiplayer in the past on RTS games was the processing power for the host computer and the internet connection required, now that both have been vastly upgraded since games like Red alert when singleplayer was dominant over the multiplayer.

Provided the forge tools allow us some robust triggers I could see a real cool campaign being made with just 3 maps. One for each species, all based on the lore.

1st - Vasari First Contact Scenario - Giant map full of TEC that you, the single Vasari player, must defeat. Just needs a few talking heads explaining how it was the first time the vasari met the humans on some outer systems, how underprepared the humans were, how they will have an easy time subjugating these people before the unnamed threat catches up with them, etc. Little finale bit explaining how in the years since then the TEC have formed and humans have gotten their act together.

2nd - Advent Return Scenario - Giant map full of TEC and Vasari in conflict that you, the single Advent player, have to defeat. A few talking heads explaining how the Advent just came back for their birthright, how how nothing will stop them, few blurbs from the TEC cpu talking about how they assumed the Advent all died out and Vasari cpu simply threatening everyone with doom and gloom unless they surrender, etc.

3rd - TEC System in Chaos Scenario - Giant map full of all three sides, player controls TEC forces. No real plot here, just some talking heads to indicate the escalating conflicts as you lead the TEC to victory (in this battle, not necessarily the war). And as soon as you wipe out the other players when an ingame cutscene pops up, notifying the player that ou have lost contact with some of the outlying TEC systems. Then lost contact with a few more. Then a few more. Big dramatic end, hinting that whatever was chasing the Vasari is coming. Or whatever, entirely up to the ICO guys, however they want to keep us hanging.

None of this would really tell us anything we don't already know, but it would help illustrate the motives of the species and let us hear/see them ingame as more than just other players.

I am sure there will be something made similar to this by the player community, but it's never quite the same as an officially endorsed plotline and professionally made scenario (also official voiceovers are 100x better than fanmade ones :) ).

I'm sure I read somewhere TEC's enemie is Advent because early Advent wont trade them and TEC kick them out of thier homeworld and they come back and payback to TEC, I'm not sure Vasari, it's more likely want to make enemies everyone while TEC love profit but only kick someone if they wont trade for profit.

End of quote

You forgot to mention the hordes of lame players that like to distrupt gameplay in ways not possible in other game genres.

@ raymundus:

Brilliant ideas, I'd love to see them implemented, and I'm sure that a few scenarios will help the lore-heads love this game.

Yes, the devs have plans to introduce a single player campaign in the upcoming (but yet unannounced) expansion.

Hooray necromancy ;)

Not going to happen in Rebellion either.
