health v armour

Sorry if this has come up before (it surely must have), but searching the forum hasn't led me to any answers.

What is the difference between researching these two? ie. does researching armour affect ships more than structures, smaller ships more than larger ships etc, compared to health (which uniformly affects everything as far as I can tell).

If I want the strongest early game fleet for the least spend, which comes first?

Thanks in advance

Health (HP) represents how much damage a unit can endure before it is killed.

Armour, on the other hand, helps prevent damage from being done. Think of it as shield mitigation, only for hulls instead of shields.

Health is more or less straightforward, it benefits based on a % basis, because capital ships have the largest numbers it benefits them the most, although its very strong for frigates as well.

armor on the other hand prevents damage, but does so on a diminishing returns basis (an increase of 3->4 armor does less than 4->5) since each upgrade increases each ship's armor by a uniform amount, and because frigates inherently have less armor this upgrade is good for all, but specifically good for the lighter ships (frigates especially).

hope that helped.

That has to be some seriously diminishing returns, because I modded the cobalt's armor to 100 and it didn't make much of an effect. I then dropped it to 0, and again not much effect. Maybe there's something to stop that kind of stupidity, but come to think of it it was 3 am, so i'm not a reliable source.

Next, I was wondering if anybody knew the armor formula or a way to change it for a mod, because I want to make some very special effects with the armor.

heh. yeah, well keep in mind that its a series of diminishing returns, so the armor might only be 2 or 3 times normal at 100 armor.

right, wasn't thinking that way. Any ideas on how to make armor that'll take 2/3rds of the sting out of most weapons but be ignored by one special type?

yeah, the wepon types are in the files somewhere, just change the weapontype to whatever you want and change unit resistances accordingly

aargh! I was hoping I wouldn't have to make tons of armor types. Thanks though.

Mitigation and shield resistances FTW!

Armor works a bit differently in the release version and isn't just a rating. There's type and rating that makes up the overall category. The manual goes into this a bit. ;)

Thanks guys this helps. It looks like its health 1st, for the next 7 days at least.

Wouldn't it be great if the manual was available for download? ;)
