How are planetary assaults handled?

Hi All,

I have a question about Sins gameplay: How are planetary assaults handled? I've played sci-fi 4X strategy games going back to Stars! and even earlier, and in most games planetary assaults are really simplistic - either you have to just land more troops than there are defenders, or you just blow the heck out of the planet from orbit. How does Sins handle this? I've read references to assault barges and being able to see nuclear mushroom clouds (cool!  :HOT: ) from orbit, but that's about it. Can you target specific planetary installations? Or is it just a general shelling from orbit? Are planets degraded during the attack? Well, you get the type of detail I'm looking for....

Can someone fill me in?

Thanks!  :)

Bomb the planet from space.

There aren't any planetary structures/installations, so for the most part it's general shelling from orbit. As you bomb, the planet's population and infrastructure decrease, and when the infrastructure reaches 0 the colony is destroyed. Some special effects (the TEC bombardment frigate can leave a radioactive trail on the planet, for example) are present, and any new colony starts from scratch - you don't inherit any planet upgrades from the past owner.
