Vasari has a tech where it increases the max fleet size by 10% so technically, it is 2200

There's no way to really answer it because it depends how your fleet is composed, what race you're using, etc. If you're playing the Vasari and build nothing but light frigate class ships, you could have a fleet of ~286 ships.

That the first thing on the modding list for me I think :P Perfect game though other than that. Double the fleet size should suit me.

There might be a small balance problem because as I said before, the Vasari have Phasic Transmissions which is a level 6 Tech that increases the Fleet Supply by 10%. Even if you increase it to 4000, the Vasari will have a cap of 4400, which is 57 more Light Frigates!

You have to play a larger game to truely get the scope. And despite what many said the fleet size should be adequate.

We must keep in mind that the game did just come out and will need further polishing as well as new additions.
