I'm playing my second game in a 4 star map. I finally managed to destroy the pirate base in my system, since the pirates were continually avoiding my forces and jumping into my undefended systems to tear up my economy. Will destroying the pirate's main base stop the pirate attacks? It's hard to expand when they are constantly sending in ships behind the front lines.

Yes, taking out all their bases in the current solar system will stop the pirate raids from raiding you in that solar system. However, its probably easier and cheaper to just make sure you aren't the highest bountied player. That will make sure they go after someone else when the raid timer expires.
