hungry
in a heavy
downpour
going down 31
passed the strip bars
empty of
hookers
and junkies
I hit a McDonald’s
for a burger and
ice tea
I pulled up to
the drive-thru
I saw this
girl
(isn’t there always
a girl)
she was huddling
in a corner
outside
I could see her
thru the glass
I thought she
was crying
I wondered about
her
I could hear her
story
dark
painful
probably horrible
filled with tales
of abuse
black and blue
and melancholy
mother a drunk
father worse
she never was his
baby
no place to hide
but a glass framed
corner at
McDonald’s
pulling away
something inside
demanded something
I honked the horn
she looked
waving her over
to the car
I crumpled a 20
and tossed it at
her
she didn’t smile
but I knew she would
eat
that was enough to get me
home
