Designate Defender

How do I designate a particular ship or class of ships to be defenders?

I'd much rather have the Battleaxe defend than an antimatter missile.

Particularly irksome is that a ship parked for repairs will "defend" an undamaged ship of a slightly lower rating.

I can't remember for sure, but I believe that the ship with the highest sum of the +ATT and +DEF values defends first.

This makes AMM missles first line of defence! Just don't leave them in fleets where they can be attacked.

So my only two options for defending missiles are to either leave them helpless inside a stack or leave them helpless outside?

That's not much of a choice.

I've been hiding them behind a phalanx of transports, and that seems to work fairly well, but it also makes it very difficult to actually get a missile to its target.

How do I defend a Starbase? Do I have to surround it with defensive ships, or is there some way to designate a defender stacked with it?

It's worth thinking the logic behind some of this.

It makes sense that the an enemy would want to target missiles before anything else.

I suggest you consider the movement ranges carefully. If an enemy ship is likely to destroy an AMM then destroy the ship with it instead. Missiles are very powerful and should be treated as very vunerable.

As for defending a starbase, build defensive modules and then actively defend it rather than waiting for enemies to attack.

Defending a starbase from interceptors is virtually impossible, as they have a speed of 10.

Best hope is to either surround it or have a large number of constructors on hand and build up its defenses all at once.

All this is predicated on two somewhat unusual conditions, those being first that the Omega mod is installed which has the Interceptor in it and second that you're playing the Altarian campaign "Torian Vengeance" mission, which gives the Torians 350%+ ship bonuses, making their Interceptors very deadly and impossible to take out with anything less than a slow-moving cap ship.

Ironically enough an AMM will "defend" a Starbase, in the same way a fuse defends the circuits it's attached to: by sacrificing itself.

I think the concept behind the AMM is flawed. No one would leave such formidable weapons unprotected. What I think would be a better model would be to
1)Reduce the AMM range.
2)Have a AMM carrier ship with long range and serious defences and able to carry about 8 missiles.

One for GalCivII perhaps.
