Will Galciv run at least acceptably on my AThlon500 ?

Huh, I just stumbled on min system req, and I was shocked to see that a PIII 600 is minimum ! I thought any 2D games could run with anything >300 MHz, it looks like it's not the case !

And unfortunely, I have an old Athlon 500 turd only .. :(
The rest of my config is above req : 256 Mb RAM, 64Mb GF2 MX400 card.

What will I get in the end ? Will the game be playable or will I experience constant slowdowns and have difficulties just moving the mouse ? :sniff!:

I'm quite patient and don't mind having a somewhat slow/choppy game when playing a 4X strategy game, but won't stand playing with a frozen machine ...
But I'm very eager to play the game ! So ? :notsure:

Im playing it on a 400MHz, alto I dont play on the biggest galaxies, but it works fine. Where did you see the 600Mhz requirement-notice?

All sellers indicate those reqs for the game - here one taken at EBGames :

System Requirements:
Minimum requirements: Windows 98/ME/2000/XP; PIII 600 MHz Processor or equivalent; 128 MB of RAM; DirectX 7.0; Compatible Video Card with 8 MB VRAM

Recommended requirements: Windows 98/ME/2000/XP; PIII 1000 MHz Processor or equivalent; 256 MB of RAM; DirectX 8.1; Compatible Video Card with 16 MB VRAM

I still dont see what is gobbling all that CPU in the game... The multithreaded AI-stuff maybe ?

That's strange.. At the strategy First website, they state:

Minimum System Requirements
Windows 98/Me/2000/XP
PII 300 MHz Processor, 128 MB RAM, 600 MB Hard Disk Space, DirectX 7.0 Compatible Video Card with 4 MB VRAM and Monitor capable of supporting 1024x768 resolution.

That info seems more real, why is there two minimum requirements out there?

Maybe by now all sellers put P3 600 as minimum req for anything including Solitaire ? LOL LOL

p3 600 is the minimum for the gigantic galaxy I think, since it is better to have a bit higher system requirements on the box then have really low ones, which could give false hope that people with their P2-400 can play a gigantic galaxy with no problem.

I think you should have no problem playing on most galaxy sizes.

In the worst case, ship movements are not so smooth and the time between turns will take a bit more on a gigantic galaxy.

The box would have the same requirements listed as the Strategy First requirements since they are the ones that make the boxes. But, at one time, I remember the requirement being 600Mhz. If the stated requirement was reduced (a possiblity) then perhaps the retail and e-stores have not yet gotten the word, or changed their ads. Or, perhaps, Strategy First has a typo. ???

Before I got my new comp, I played GalCiv on a AMD K2 450 MHz with 384 megs of RAM. I ran OK, even playing with a large galaxy. BTW, pdifolco, you're spot on with system reqs. I have seen them listed as this for the last two and a half months.

Hey Asmod, I played Galciv when it was early beta on a k6-2 405mhz too :)

I was surprised it ran so good, offcourse it was because there was hardly any stuff implanted ;)

About systems requirements, I made a post about it a while ago.
The reply came with a list of systems requirements so the 600mhz etc is the official list.

B4 that when Galciv was in an earlier form of development the system requirements may have been lower, probably explaining the difference between the various shops.

I've played GalCiv on a Dual PII 350 with 256MB RAM and it played as well as on my other PC with is an Athlon 1.4GHz with 512MB RAM. Didn't play the 'big' map sizes though.

Thanks all, I'm now pretty sure I won't have too much problems playing, I'll buy it, just have to wait for release !! :p

P4? Bah. I'm not going to turn this into a hardware war but I like to support the competition. I've got a trio of athlons at my house two 1600's and my own 1900... Without competition those pentiums would cost you an arm and a leg.
