Grid Display when Ships are Clicked

Could someone in the know answer this please? When you click on a ship, the mini map grids highlight, depending on what ship you clicked. What does this represent? For some ships it is less.. for some, more. But it doesn't seem to be their range.. for clicking a defender that has a range of 1 sector lights up grids further away than this. Unless a square isn't a sector? What *is* a sector, if it is not a highlighted square (not counting the grid squares, if you enable them).

In fact.. what exactly *is* a Parsec, and what is a Sector? Thanks for any answers!

I think it is the range, that is the sectors where your ship can travel. It is not how far you can travel in one turn. Plus the range depends in which sectors you have your stars.

From another hand if you click on the star base, you also can see the same thing, but star base can not move, and I am not sure what the brightened grid represents for this case.

The highlighted part of the minimap is the range. Sectors more than one away from a Defender could light up for a couple reasons.

First, range refers to the number of sectors you can travel away from your colonies. BattleAxes, which have a range of zero, can move around your entire empire, as long as they stay in sectors you have colonies in. As such, if your empire is 3 sectors "long", your BattleAxe could like it has a range of two or three.

Also, there are several techs that increase your range. If you've researched any of those, your ships will be able to travel farther.

As to your question about terminology:

Game map = galaxy.
Major division on mini-map = sector
Each individual tile in sector = parsec

More pseudo-scientifically speaking, a sector would be a part of a (more or less) circular thing (think of piecharts here) and a parsec describes the distance at which the radius of Earths' orbit (=1AU) around the sun appears to span an angle of one second; that's about 3.26 lightyears. ;)

Anyone else suspicious that the value of a parsec (3.26) is darn close to the value of pi (3.14 etc)? I see grand cosmic forces at work... ;)
