n00b question regarding planet quality ability

The PQ improvement is a percentage, so you will not notice an improvement of it for PQ planets below 20 for the 5% jump. The way the PQ bonus works is (Base PQ) times the bonus represented as 1.05%. For example 15 * 1.05 = 15.75. The game does not round up, so anything up to 15.99 will remain 15. You can get a better bonus as you research more improvements, or by building improvements. For example, a PQ 15 with a 5% bonus, Soil Enhancement (10%) and Habitat Improvement (10%), for a total of 25% bonus will equal a PQ of 18.

Any bonuses you have will not show until you colonize the planet.

Gamehat, you should be aware that colonizing planets below PQ15 early in the game is dangerous to your income. It costs more to maintain these planets because they are not ideal for humans.

Use of soil, habitat,terraforming enhancements during the game will increase the PQ (planet quality) thus allowing faster population increase on these planets.

Is it ever really wise to colonize those less then 15 PQ? Just curious what your opinion is?

I sometimes will grab a 14 and buy the improvements to make it a 15 or 16 and trade it for the minor who stole all the AI techs that sometimes happens. Chessy exploit I know, but I have not been submitting to the metaverse it no longer will work for me.

There is several opinions about this. My strategy is to ignore planets below 15 except in the following instances.

1. During the colonization phase if I have to get to another sector but I am out of range I will temporarily colonize any planet just to get me that range to the next planet. Once I get there you must abandon that colony or it will suck your finances away.

2. Later in the game I will colonize planets as low as PQ13 to try and get the events to allow me to change/improve my alignment. Usually I am trying to go good on a small map and there are never enough events to go good.

3. Sometimes late in the game I will colonize planets as low as PQ13 and rush build/buy all the social buildings so that my population can increase. Usually when I get here I am a bit bored and the game is in the bag.

Population is a factor in the score of the game although no one outside of stardock really knows how important that factor is.

I usually play with a 5% planet quality improvement. That means that with Soil Improvement, all 15s become 17s, and all 14s become 16s. That means that while I will not rush to take a 14 (it is a race for the 15+ planets, you can fill in 14s later) I will do it moderately quickly.

However, 13s are not worth colonizing until Habitat Improvement is available and even then will have a significant carrying cost while the improvements build unless I have the cash for a straight purchase. If I have to use a below-14 to leverage expansion, I prefer these.

12s and 11s are a pain in the ass, never really becoming profitable, and costing a lot to get borderline. If I need to use them to expand, I start them building a colony ship, so that when the expansion goal is met, I can purchase the colony ship, take my colonists, and disband the colony.

The thing I do use 10-12 (and even a rare 9) for is my colony ship rush for cultural conquest in the late going. If you put a lot of colonies down and send a bunch of constructors, it is amazing how quickly you can take a whole cluster down. (You *must* have a larger military than your target to get away with this.)

I colonize the PQ12-14 for the events as well as for an culture flipping later in the game. Also, if I want to flip a few worlds, I have colonize very low PQ world that have strangely high influence values. I found a PQ8 that had influnce of 49 base. Worked wonders with 4 maxed out influnce resource bases.

NewfyScotian, thanks for all your excellent advice and links. It has been a long time since I played Galciv. It appears there are many new things I need to discover and learn about.

I am still learning from people here myself. Sometimes I discover new things that ... I forgot. There is a lot of different things in this game.

Yeah one of the reasons I am highly addicted to the game. I have to work on my NEW website. It is tough to drag myself away from playing Galciv to do anything. LOL

I will be sure to keep stopping in here to tune my playing style. I am hoping my game will submit this time. Playing on gigantic maps only makes very long games. Especially with the Omega Mod installed.

Have you tried my Saints and Sinners event pack?

I have been meaning to but I have only tried one mod since I started playing GC over a year ago. I have a gene and it controls my procrastination, which is quite high.

MD's pack works wonders. I can get Pure Good (Saintly) in just a few colonization events now.

Matthew Downie that is an excellent mod you made. I forgot to mention that in another thread. I really enjoy it. Now though I am hooked on the Omega Mod, Tolot mods make the whole game different. I plan to use your Mod and his together my next game.
