90% too much for Cultural Victory?

Note that I'm very new to the game, and am not quite so much asserting this notion as I am asking about it.

Is 90% of the galaxy pretty harsh for achieving a cultural victory? Not just in terms of the player winning this way, but also in making it a victory condition the AI might achieve and thus be something to be afraid of?

Just seems like 90% is a whole heck of a lot. Can anyone comment if this amount was fiddled around with much during testing?

It works well as an amount, any less and you would end up not being able to win militarily, as everytime you got close you would have a culture victory.

I find this victory type the easiest of all of them to acheive.

Yeah, 90% seems an awful lot, but it's really more a matter of time to get to 90%, it's not always particularly *difficult* to get there.
Also, if it was only around 66% (2/3rds) for example, that could leave a very powerful civilization in the other 1/3rd who could easily beat you back militarily at that point. When it starts to approach 90% on the larger maps, you'll find systems start defecting to your side fairly regularly, nibbling away at any advantage an AI may have. If anything, the amount could do with a bump up a percentage point or two! :)

I don't know, I get 90-95% and still can't ever win. One of the DEVs statements mentioned that the cultural victory was a way to PREVENT you from having to kill every last single planet (because it's not FUN once the other empires are so weak they are no challenge), but killing every single last planet is the only way I can ever win no matter how much culture I have. :(

Soulfire, are you at war with someone? You can't be at war and win culturally.

I've won a cultural victory without occupying other race's systems. I move a starbase into the sector and build up the cultural influence value, which gives me the sector eventually.

I've never won via 'cultural conquest', but isn't their a tech by that name? Does that need to be research in order to win maybe?

No, there's no tech requirement. As noted above, the reason most folks have problems with claiming cultural victories is because you can't be at war with anyone (the time-to-dominance clock is frozen while your at war). I mean, pop music and snazzy clothes can only do so much to win a people over when you're wiping out billions of them every few months.

Yes, but no. I've won five cultural games w/o that tech.

"I move a starbase into the sector and build up the cultural influence value"

Don't do that on higher AI levels unless you have the military muscle to back it up. They catch on to what you're doing and tell you to f-off, or else.

All my games so far (all 3 of them ;) ) have been won by a cultural victory. No wars fought, just cultural imperialism all the way.

I admit, though - they were against "Fool" and "Beginner" AIs. Clearly, I'll run into something more serious pretty soon...

90% really isn't that hard to get when you are the dominant power in the galaxy. You need about 1/2 of the planets and/or several +influence starbases. Mid-late game has several techs that help boost influence and several galactic wonders that boost it as well.

Idleprocess - Nope, you just have to have control of enough sectors and then eventually you'll get a countdown that you're going to win culturally in 2 years if the situation doesn't change. You can have it happen at any point in the game. The cultural conquest and surrounding tech items just give you piles of starbase modules that'll help you get there.
