freighter protection

Is there a way to have a combat unit or 2 group with a freighter as an escort?

I don't think so, but you should definitely be able to stack a ship or 2 on top of a trade ship and assign it to escort duty.

Especially given that the game suggests you escort your trade ships to protect them. How does one accomplish this?

On the Star system screen you can combine several ships into a fleet that will move together. So just have you r freighter join the fleet with a couple of escort ships and you have your very own Convoy!

they wont escort an established trade route though dragonmack and thats where the real protection is needed.

I suppose I could try putting ships on a freighter to see if I can form a fleet. I may have done that last night - but if I did (and I think I did), the end result was that the freighter just sat there and the fleet refused to take any orders until I disbanded it.
