Better late than never!

Well, here's a kind of goofy story. I originally bought GalCiv before it was even released, as part of the pre-release beta program. To my shame, I never did end up playing it, as real life interfered.

To my further shame, I never bothered getting the full release version once IT came out! Never even played the game once!

I was sitting around a couple weeks ago with nothing to do, yearning for some kinda computer game to amuse my boredom, when I remembered -- hey, didn't I buy a space conquest game like two years ago? What the hell ever happened to that?

Well, after talking with the fine folks over at Stardock and convincing them that I actually did purchase the game (having long since lost my serial # or any other evidence), I finally, FINALLY downloaded the game, learned it, and started playing it.

All I can say is, what a moron I've been! I've had more fun in the last week and a half with this game than probably ANY civ/4X-type game I've ever played, and GalCiv has already found itself with a spot in my top five favorite games ever. It's just great! GREAT, I say! An absolute breeze to play, even in big galaxies, it never gets bogged down, it's never frustrating, and it has just enough humor to keep a smile on your face even when you're getting all your ships blown up by the Yor (not a big fan of these guys, so far, I gotta tell you.)

I think the greatest tribute to the game's excellent design is that, even though the options of "governors" are offered, I've never once felt the need/desire to use them, even towards the end of a very large game. And for the first time since I can remember in a strategy game, everything just feels... RIGHT.

Anyway, like I said, better late than never, and here's a toast to the fine folks who put this gem together! Thanks very much!

Now, when's GC2 coming out? ;)

Yep, one of the cool things about Galciv is that everything, from the economy to relations with other civs, works the way you think it would. And it's light on micromanagement, too. That's always appreciated.

But use those governors, they're not like governors in other games. They don't make any decisions for you, they're just a way to set up a social building order, or switch many military projects with just a few clicks. I use em all the times.

You have to turn the govenors decision making off in the menu area first.

I guess I've just never hit a point in a game where I didn't mind just making all the decisions and clicking all the planets "manually" when I wanted to do something. Social build order, particularly, I sort of like to customize for each individual planet, as my plans tend to firm up and then dissolve faster than you can say "poor colony management". :)
