What happens to social spending if a planet isn't building anything?

Sorry if this question has already been asked, but I searched the FAQ's and the forum.

Let's say my social spending is at 50%, and Earth is cranking out 10+0 social production. If Earth isn't producing any social projects, what happens to that 10 BC (and the production they make)? Is it simply lost, or does the money go back into my treasury?

What happens to military spending (I assume it's the same as social).

Thanks!

Do not be sorry to ask a question.

Spending money on social production increases moral and population.

Woah.. this is probably why I always have a hard time struggling with moral. When I'm not producing much, I turn social production spending way down, sometimes to 0%.

Thanks Technician, that explains a lot. My next question was going to be "How come the other races add population faster even though I've got better planets," but that answers it.

I wasn't aware about this one. Are you sure? is there any reference to this?

I should clarify.

It is my understanding is taxes have the biggest impact on moral.

It is my understanding if you have one system nothing is the social build queue. Social spending would not be used and wasted.

Spending money on social projects may depending on the project increase moral, Planet Quality.

Aliens often early in the game have higher population growth.
On higher levels they get bonus, they inhabit only good systems and know where all the prime systems are located.

Well, they are surely running at 100% morale which double their pop growth. And wisely upload colonists in their colony ships to keep a nice overall growth.
Using cheat codes can help to monitor their planets

Yes.

They always know where yellows stars are located. It is in the backstory and, if I remember clearly, is told on the GGN report in january 2178.

Tech, I have never noticed that spending social money on nothing gets translated into population.

I think that on my next game I will try a little test to find out what happens to that money.

There has been discussion that the money goes into a pit never to be seen again.

I ran a test today to see if spending social money on nothing actually produced population. I tried one whole year with the spending at 100% on social but actually building nothing and then reloaded the game and tried it with the slider set to research at 100% for a whole year. There was no noticiable difference to me.

the money is wasted and it is one of the most irritating aspects of this game. For example in my current game I had 7 planets all pretty much fully developed, then 3 planets defected to me but they were not very well developed so I had to increase my production to get them to build anything. So my best planet was producing over 400 social per go which was all wasted while the best of the new planets could only manage about 50 per month so in order to build on the new planets I have to waste over 90% production - totally absurd.

Yeah, balancing social builds across all your planets is tricky. In a situation like that, Strek, it would be useful to research some techs that have trade goods or wonders, and then turn up your social spending. Then your good planets will have some expensive things to build while those other planets catch up in basic infrastruture.

Also, some improvements are very expensive to build, but not too useful. I don't build stuff like advanced quality control and info net on purpose, I only build those on planets that have already built the stuff I actually want.

At that point I'd already built everything I wanted, including every project I could build, this is probably why the other planets defected to me in the first place as some of these projects increased my influence. The only way to avoid wasteage was to build unwanted stuff which is even worse than not building anything at all!

Hey, if GalCiv was perfect, we'd have nothing to look forward to in GC2. ;)
