Open Letters to Stardock - Please fix the Metaverse

Dear Stardock (Frogboy, CariElf, others),
I have been collecting ideas and suggestions on how to improve the Metaverse. You have probably seen some of the dissatisfaction with the current Metaverse in various postings from newbys to oldies. We hereby implore you to ask for and take into consideration ideas that many will put forth as ways to make it better, to bring greater satisfaction to both those just starting out and those who have played for over a year and would like to continue, but for the pain the current Metaverse inflicts upon their participation in this community.

The problem as I see it, and others potentially as well, although there are many ways of stating what the problems are, is that new commers find it hard to get the recognition at the top of the Metaverse withoug being forced into a particulare style of play. For old timers who are at the top, they find that there is no where to go, so they quit playing for a while and find that when they start up again they are penelized for submitting games to the Metavers. One particulare Guardian, number 2 on the list, just submitted a game and lost 75K points - not a real encouragement to continue to participate in the Metaverse community.

How can we meet this diverse set of requirements that will not only attract new players (sell more copies of the game) and keep current players playing (spread the word about how great a game it is to potential new players).

One suggestion that has met with some level of support is to set differnet rules for different levels of players. For example, new players might start out in one level, and as they meet certain milestones, they move up to the next level, much like characters in some of the fantasy games (after all, isn't the Metaverse just a different form of fantasy game? :) ). One could set up enough levels to satisfy just about anyone, and if not, in the design, make it easy to start a new level.

Some of the things that irritate players most should be fixed - i.e., changed (they may in fact not be broken). For example, losing points after taking a vacation (real life vacation, or just a breather from the game). What you earn should be what you keep. If you stop playing, you just stagnate, or get removed as inactive until you play again, then you get reinstated where you left off.

Others have suggested different levels for different types of games, size of galaxy, etc. A lot of variables here. Some of these are currently implemented in the Metaverse.

But, we are seeing more and more people retiring from the game because they can't stand the pain of losing points. You might respond that they should just play the game and not participate in the Metaverse. But, whether for good or ill, Stardock has created the Metaverse that has spawned a community of players that is probably unequalled anywhere in the gaming world today. Take advantage of this and continue to grow the loyalty. That loyalty has resulted in quite a few upgrading to TotalGaming.Net to play your other games.

Please respond. Ask for input. Listen, report back to your constituants and let us know what you are thinking. Don't leave us in the dark, alone. We will all eventually just go away if you do.

cheers,
Weyrleader

Games are definitely being dropped by the Meta. For example, "Doug Deagnon" had 40 games and 550+k points a few days ago. He now has 39 games and 328+k points. His first game now shows 9/5/2003. The dropping of games > than 1 year old may be a NAPWAD (i.e. not a problem works as designed). Yes, I did work in an IT department for 20+ years, hence the acronyms.

it would appear that NOW the metaverse IS recalcing my scores on a daily basis
End of quote

can someone please check my score to see if it is correct
End of quote

Well, if a recalc is done on a daily basis, your score is correct. The problem is that you have 2 period of inactivity: from 03/12/04 to 05/03/05 and from 06/21/04 to 08/03/04. On the 08/03/04, all blocks were filled. But on the 08/27/04, you have 2 empty blocks which isn't very good for your score, since it is better to spread games between blocks.

Hmmm....my points are all gone ;p

shame on me for not playing this game for months...better start cracking out some quick pts :HOT:

thanks pheonix.. I didn't think that games had been dropped.. IU'm glad its just from a recalc.. loosing 110,000 points approx is a hard pill to swollow but thats the nature of the beast we call the metaverse .. I can only hope that its now doing the recalcs for ALL players not jusat the acrive players on a daily basis

How is it possible to have 0 points when you have games? I thought there was some base value where you didn't loose any more.

J.T.Qwerk, good I am glad someone mentioned about the decaying score. I had 12,000 and now down too almost 6000. I have not been able to submit any scores at all past 10 games. I never tells me it made it or did not. No idea why either. The first 6 games I did not have one single Mod installed. :sniff!:

Personally I feel the entire metaverse should be reset to zero everyone starting over. This would breath new life into people playing. It seems that many of the top players were also Beta testers. There are quite a few things that I feel need to be changed but everyone else has covered it nicely. :p

Um, I respectfully disagree. I think it would be the final nail in the coffin. I have been playing for six months now, and have finally worked my way to the top of page 2 in the meta. Climbing the boards has kept me interested longer than is usual for a computer game. If my score was reset, I would quit. I bet a lot of others would feel the same. Also, it is not imposible for new players to get into the top spots, and it doesn't take 60K maso cranking. I haven't played maso yet (although I have been at crip for a lot of it). It just takes persistance.

I probably would NOT stick around id the metaverse was reset..

IT DOESN'T NEED TO BE..

JUST PULL YOUR FINGERS OUT AND YOU CAN MAKE IT

If I can get up to and stay in the top 25 then anyone can.. Its very doable.. just don't ecpect to get there overnight or even in a couple of months.. maybe 6 months and you'll get there with enough stability to remain there for quite a while.. remember slow but sure wins the race...

Why arn't I in number 1 spot then.. because I havn't done what i've been saying...

Key thing to remember ... If you can't be sure to play x number of games every month.. then reduce it to x-1 games / month right from the start... I recomend startingoff at about 4 games / month .. thats one game a week.. very resonable.. not much change of burning yourself out...

Treat the metaverse as you would a year long (or longer)compedative sporting event.. where you have to pace yourself.. and have to attend all those sporting functions....

eg: if you played soccer or football or cricket.. you'd have a club meeting once a week where you'd play for the prize..

Treat the metaverse like that and you won't go wrong.. you'll be supprised just how quickly your scores will add up.. with minimal loss through aging as you only loose 5% / every 30day block ( or was that 10%)

I think it is a great analogy. More, it stressed that regularity is the key factor for metaverse. In sport, if you are injured and spend some times without practicing, you need time to recover the level before the injury. It is the same thing with metaverse if have time without submitting games.

Qwerk and Peace are correct. Take your time and be consistant and you will get there.

If you are a person that likes to crank out games then read the MASO strategy threads and you will find the formula for MASO/LARGE map 60K alliance wins. Perhaps you can be the person to beat Technician!

Tech plays about 3-4 games per day. I think he has the game down to a half hour. I have said before that he must be insane ...

There are a lot of old timers that have stopped playing and they are on the way down the ranking list.

The best advice we can give you is enjoy the game. Join an empire and participate in their forums.

Desert Fox you should update your game to v1.21. You are playing a very old version of the game. There are new features and bug fixes that have occured.

Also there has been a scoring adjustment to the new version that will increase your scores greatly. :SURPRISED:
