Population

Population

Hi, im quite new to this game so there is quite a bit i dont understand, the majour one is population. I had played and won a "huge" map with 2 normal and 3 semi mormal races and now im playing the biggest map type.

In my last game, my population was #1 in the galaxy throughout the whole game but in this new game its been #6 since the start. I have battle cruisers already and i have no more than 500mil on any planet! Whats going on? in my other game, by this time my best planet had like 5 billion +!

is it because:

my tax rate has been at 70%?

I have made many evil choices?

I have colonised around 3 dozen star systems this early in the game?

Is it any of these? I am begining to think its the taxes because after i lowered it to 50% the pop is starting to rise a bit, however now my moral is at 99% and it seems like an awfull waste of tax money. Im mainly worryed about my population because although i totaly own the other civs in battle and iv blocaded all the dergain planets, I DONT HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE TO LOAD INTO THE TRANSPORTS!

anyone knows what may be goin on? :notsure:

Peace Phoenix, I have never been able to steal techs.

I don't exactly know what is needed to success in stealing tech. I beleive that:
- you need to have the highest level of knowledge of the civ you are spying (advanced)
- since I think remember to have read that spying is checked against population, you need to spend lots of money to succeed against another empire
- I guess that spying bonus can really help, since I think the remember to succeed in stealing tech late in the game, after having researched tech that increase spying
- there needs to be techs that you don't know and can have it if they are linked with alignement (ie you never willl succeed, in the latest version, to steal disruptors if you are good).

As you can see, you won't be able to steal tech at the beginning of the game when your are behind in tech, and will more likely being able to steal tech in the late game, when there is no longer tech to steal (if you have becoming the new tech leader).

That makes more sense then.. I have not mastered the levels above normal yet. All good game playing tips.. Get me more addicted then I am now. ;p

I am not able to locate the propaganda slider yet. I sure could use it in my present game. I will look back at the thread on it and see why I am not finding it. :notsure:

Go to the screen showing a planet, where you can set for the planet military project and social project. At the bottom left, there is a button labelled "details".
Click on it. You will have access to a screen where you see, on the left, which improvements are already built. You can destroy some if you want. Very useful for cleaning high maintenance cost project built by AI. On the right of teh screen, there is the giverbor affected to the planet and the associated building list (I think it is the remaning list for the planet but I am not sure). At the center of the screen, you see some informatiosn about the planet, like domestic and galactic ranking, morale and planetary bonuses. Just below there is the propaganda slider. If you move it when the morale is below 100, you will see that morale given on the top of the screen increase.

Hope this help.

I have been able to steal techs only late in the game against an AI that I have advanced knowledge due to spying. Even if the AI is ahead of me in somethings there is no guarantee that you will steal something.

I feel that spending money on spying is a waste of my resources.

I do know that spying can prevent certain events from happening during the game. But ... I would rather do a reload of a saved game if the event was not favourable than spend money on spying. This is cheese but I use it!

Wrong. Morale +10% means that your planet morale is greater (I don't have the exact formula). It is the empire level population growth bonus that have an impact on population. And, as the post I was refering to at #4 said, the growth bonus is a bonus on the population growth, not on the population of a planet. But there is a cap about the population growth per turn: it is 200 Millions. So at a certain population per planet, 100% morale is no longer required for maximum pop growth.
End of quote

I heard that at 1.7 billion, you get maximum growth with 100% morale, even with no population growth bonuses. At 3.4 billion, you get maximum growth even with morale 55% to 99%. This means that population growth bonuses aren't very useful except in the early game.
When morale is at 54%(?) growth stops entirely. At this point, a +10% morale social improvement would start increase your population again, and so morale here really is synonymous with 'population cap'.
However, morale also wins you elections and (I'm told) makes you more resistant to alien culture.

I believe that a +10% race morale has no effect on a planet with no social improvements. What it does is improve the effect of your social improvements - a +20% morale Entertainment Network would become a +22% morale Entertainment Network.

Another thing worth remembering is that population numbers don't have all that drastic an effect upon your planet's output. The first billion or so have a fairly noticeable effect, but after that they're really only good for loading on to combat transports, etc.

And I believe PQ simply affects a planet's base morale level.

That's not all it does. High PQ also boosts the tax income and productivity of a colony.

Here is an except from the following thread http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GS&id=155077

The minimum population on a planet giving the cap limitation with 3% base growth is given by the formula:
Pop = 200/(0.03*(1+growth bonus/100). And this give the following table:
0 6667
10 6061
20 5556
30 5128
40 4762
50 4444
60 4167
70 3922
80 3704
90 3509
100 3333
110 3175
120 3030
130 2899
140 2778
150 2667
End of quote

So the 3.4 billions corresponds to an empire wide growth bonus of 90%. You won't have this without aphrodisiac and lots of tech if you haven't choose growth bonus pick

That's not all it does. High PQ also boosts the tax income and productivity of a colony.
End of quote

Yes, but the question was about morale, so I haven't spoken about others benefits.
