Pleasingly plump? What do men really think?

Pleasingly plump? What do men really think?

I was reading an article by stevendedalus a little earlier and a passing phrase therein reminded me of a recurring wondering I have: what do men really look for in a woman physically? Is it the languid, limpid-eyed lasses of classical art, the buxom betties depicted in old pirate and western movies, those r&b babes with big bums or indeed the ultra-slender it girls that dominate TV screens, billboards and magazine pages in most of the developed (pardon the pun) world?

This pondersome question of mine was also raised the other day when I was watching Video Hits or similar and had the misfortune of stumbling across Millsy's new music video (for those not in the know, Millsy was a runner-up in Australian Idol and was the darling of most Aussie girls between the ages of 11 and 16 for his boyish good looks and larrikin personality). The song is called Miss Vanity and the music video features a whole lot of beauty queens strutting around in swimsuits. Well when I was watching it seemed to me that all those girls seemed so THIN! Not in a, 'Wow, I wish I looked like that' way, but in a 'Is that really considered attractive?' way.

So come on guys, don't be shy, spill the beans? Solve magazine publishers' and Hollywood's marketing questions once and for all. What's hot and what's a turn off?

Curvaceously yours... or not?

I think it is more a matter of health. Some people are naturally thin, and others are naturally plump, and both can radiate a natural healthiness. People who are purposely making themselves thin look sick. I see stars all the time in their mid-20s and 30s that could be someone's grandmother from the neck down. There is a difference between healthy leanness and a wasted skinniness. Same for people who are plump. Sedintary gluttony shows, and looks nothing like someone who is healthy and on the lean end of overweight.

Your appearance is an extention of your lifestyle I think. Your weight doesn't make you pretty, it is just a by-product of your lifestyle. I have seen really healthy, self-assured women who some would consider fat and they were far more attractive than the skinny, vain women with stripper hair and too much makeup. Just my opinion. Healthy is beautiful, and skinny isn't always healthy.

I like the slender librarian/nerd look.

Give me a healthy (i.e: not twiggy and all skeleton like... perhaps with a few extra pounds, to give me something to hold onto) nerdy girl with glasses and I'm won over!

As far as I can tell, there are a few consistencies between our likes and dislikes, but... Everyone is different (No two people are not on fire). For me it's usually different little things like mannerisms and a well-cut pair of flared jeans or a crazy sense of humor. Here's a few other things that light (and extinguish) my fire...

Whats Hot: A nice smile, the eyes (it's all in the eyes), modesty, the token librarian and nerd girls in movies (Rachael Leigh Cook - Anti-trust), intelligence, interesting personality, caring, good proportions, healthy hair (long or short), not afraid to eat a decent meal, or chocolate, or ice-cream, French/Africaans accent, free thinker...

Jessica Alba, Lee lee Sobieski, Allyson Hannigan, Keira Knightly.

Whats Not: Skanky clothes (belts being used as skirts and bikini tops being used as a top and not underwear), stilts masquerading as shoes (esp. the clear plastic ones), drug and bad diet affected skin, stoner eyes, "Im hot and don't I know it", surgical 'enhancments', enough piercings to resemble a tackle box, noticeably low self-esteem, sheep mentality...

Britney, Christina, Missy Elliot, Courtney Love, Calista 'emaciated' Flockhart.

What Doesn't Matter: Height, shoe size, the car they drive, what they did ## years ago, who and what their family are, how much money they earn (social status).

IMHO, magazine publishers, advertisers, fashion label marketing and Hollywood have it wrong most of the time. I guess they want to stand out from the crowd by being shocking, different and to be able to say "My models are thinner than yours!" but give me a 50's pinup girl anyday!

Healthy. I want healthy. Too much weight seems unhealthy. A little weight does not appear unhealthy. Too thin is unhealthy. I want a girl (and mine is like this...) that is healthy -- has clear eyes, a clear mind (no drugs, smoking, and preferably no drinking), clear skin, and glowing with life and health. Pregnant women are some of the prettiest women for this very reason.

Please note that I did not say anything about short, tall, big, little, smart, simple or extravagant, classic or country, introvert or extrovert, Braves fan or Yankees fan. These are negotiable by most guys looking for anything beyond a one-night stand.

Ahh my girlfriend is healthy. but she seems to have a problem that I see alot of women with, She thinks she's too fat, whats up with this? --Asking the ladies now
She is thinner at her belly/waist that at her hips and chest, and I have never thought her fat, over wieght, or even "pleasantly plump"
Is her self image related to how she feels about other things? some days she will look in the mirror, and be like "damn I'm sexy today"
but its not very often, I do worry about her but I'm not sure if there is anything I can do to make her feel better... (its not me thats causing these things with her)

I dont mean to detract from your main post but it is related, I also have no preference on the wieght of a woman as long as not way to skinny or to fat.

IN order to have a nice ass you have to HAVE an ass, i.e. something more than the termination of two limbs at the lower back.

I get tired of people promoting a manly ass as something women should have. Exercise shows always seem to have these women that are one big V from their shoulders to their hips. That is monkeying with biological identity, I think. I'm not gay, so I really don't find a linear, manly ass very attractive.

And in conclusion what constitutes the figure of a man?

I used to like men that were big, strong, dark, kind of neanderthals! On the contrary, my boyfriend is tall, lean, athletc, has light hair and chisled features. I have no preference really, as long as the guy stimulates me intelectually. To me, that is sexy. He also has to make me laugh. That's just for starters.....

Princess Lea in her slave outfit in The Empire Strikes Back would be a good example...

I like a nice round well-defined ass on a woman. I like curves. Big breasts don't really do it for me, I like my women proportional. And I think the male figure is just ridiculous looking for all intents and purposes. Women are so much nicer to look at, in general.

From the comments that I have heard about women is that most men seem to like proportionate women.  I am overweight, but I am proportionately overweight.  I still have a waist that is smaller than my hips and chest, so I have "curves".  However, I see a lot of overweight women who turn into a marshmallow with twig legs, or they look "normal" from the waist up.  I think in general we find proportionate people more attractive.  (There is a huge study on faces and what makes an attractive face, which shows that proportionate features, and having the sides of the face closer to the same makes people attractive.  If you don't know what I mean about the sides of your face- they are not symmetrical)
