Translating GalCiv

I tried to fiddle around with the different files to translate GC into Italian (or at least to translate it into Italish...).

My aim is not to have a professionally translated version, but just to have a playable version around.

I saw that there are around some German versions and I understand that there are other localized versions modded by the users.

I would like to start a discussion about this project.

I have several questions on the subject... such as:

How much time would it take to have a decent local version?
How would you structure it? Where to start?
For an easier project, should we stay with the "keywords" (ie technologies, ships, improvements, etc) in English and translate just the descriptions?

Thanks in advance for your help

I think that French (for this one I am sure) and German version weren't modded by user.
Basically, you need to translate all files. And especially english.str
BUT you should translate only thing that are between " " (rules of thumb, right part of any line). The rest corresponds to keywords used by the exe. What must be translated is what is displayed to the user, not what is used by the exe.

Thanks Peace Phoenix.

I started last night... and it will last for several ones!

Btw I think I'll end up translating just the full descriptions.

Hey folks... I ended translating all the events and all the ships... and currently at 50% of the techs.

One question though... should I put everything in the mods folders or just replace the original ones in the galciv\data\ ?

I am asking this because I started translating (and updating directly) the original GCTech.tech in the galciv\data\ directory (and it did work).
Last night I replaced the other files (.ship, .event, and the other .tech) - it didnt work anymore. Symptoms: working when reloading an older file, closing when starting a new game.

Thx in advance.

Well in my german translation I replace the data directory directly, and it works "perfectly"
It could get messed when you accidentally translate something that should not have been

don't forget that in later versions, txt files were in the savegame to prevent abuse. So modifying files works only when starting a new game.

It is safer to use the mods folder. So you can still have the orignal files :)

Thx to IT and PP - good suggestions and help as always :)

I guess that I will switch to GC Writer then, I just downloaded and it looks far easier to avoid mistakes (I was typing directly into Notepad or Word).

Moreover, I would love to find anyone that would help me with the translation into Italian... anyone out there?
