System Requirements: P2-450Mhz, 384Mb of RAM?

Greetings,

Having been sung the praises of GalCiv by some of my friends, I decided to check it out. It all sounds very good and I'm looking forward to playing a game with such a competitive AI.

However, my specs are as above (P2-450Mhz, 384Mbs of RAM, Geforce2 (not that the video card is a critical component in this case, I would think), all running on Win98).

So that puts me 150Mhz below the minimum spec and not even in sight of the recommended one. :notsure:

Now that the release code is here (and the first few updates? As I said, I'm new here), can anyone tell me what to expect on that machine spec? I certainly have enough memory to hold quite a bit of info without much swapping. But the AI will care more about CPU cycles, right?

Is this going to limit me in the gameplay or should all universe sizes still be playable?

Many thanks,
Wendy

Well, you could wait for the demo....

On the other hand there are a quite few people around who posted that they were playing with 350-500 MHZ. It seems as long as you have enough RAM and don“t want to play the largest galaxy it is fine.

You could take a look yourself although at apolyton.com there is a thread dedicated at this topic.

Hello Arne,

I could obviously wait for the demo. But then what would I play tonight? ;p

Good news about people playing in that CPU speed range. In a way, it would be disappointing, not to get access to the largest galaxy but how limitating would you say that would be? If I could play all the other sizes (how many are there, by the way?), I guess that would be OK.

Any chance you can point me to the Apolyton thread you mentioned? I had a look around but couldn't locate it.

Many thanks,
Wendy

I hope this one helps to make up your mind... You should take a look around for older posts on this topic /pre -release

Thanks Arne,

It helps indeed. I think the game sounds so good that it deserves a try. The thread also offers hope with the hint that disabling background GalCiv tasks might lead to longer wait times but allow the game to run better, even in larger Galaxies. I wonder if one of the developers would have comments on the effect of doing this (if it is even possible?)?

Thanks for the link.
