Luring the enemy

Finished a game at Challenging a few hours ago. For the final assault on Drengin home systems, I found myself outgunned so I resorted to a bait. Placed 4 combat transports some 8 parsecs out from the enemy systems, waited, waited... and 4 enemy Dreadnoughts came out to destroy my ships! I retreated and kept my distance, drawing the enemy 3 sectors south.
With enemy homeworld defences reduced to a couple of Defenders, a few BattleHammers and just 2 remaining Dreadnoughts I then moved in, smashed the defenders and launched my ground assaults. While I was conquering the planets, reinforcement from my own homeworlds met up with my transports and destroyed the enemy Dreadnoughts.
Bottom line - without the bait I would not have been able to attack until many months later and planetary defences would have added to my losses. Is this a common tactic and does it work on higher levels?
