come fiddle with my riddle ?

http://www.loserturdmafia.com/

i have the strength of sixty men, i'm over ten feet tall
i'm footed, though i never move, it's said that i can fall

in grand ballrooms i can be seen holding up affairs
and i can bring the house down if i crack up near the stairs

... what am i ?

if you know the solution to this riddle, please make me very happy by posting it :) ... but if you do post the answer, you must post the next riddle to be guessed by the next successful person, and so on. or so i hope.

course, the whole thing could get ignored, too. how embarrasing that would be. hehe. oh, well ... the risks one will take in order to achieve linguistic banter these days apparently know no bounds !!!. somebody guess, dammit ;)

is innuendo back in fashion ?

It's called misdirection. Like a magic trick, the answer isn't what you think but is obvious once you know what it is. (Don't blame me, I just opened the rogue email. )

and gene, i have to go to sleep, it's 2am .... you're in charge of the riddle thread. see you in 8 hours

It's almost 9 A.M. here and I haven't been to sleep yet, so they'll have to handle it on their own.

The answer to Smartaz' riddle is:
A Last Name.

Another math-based puzzle:

There are 4 women who want to cross a bridge. They all begin on the same side. You have 17 minutes to get all of them across to the other side. It is night. There is one flashlight. A maximum of two people can cross at one time. Any party who crosses, either 1 or 2 people, must have the flashlight with them. The flashlight must be walked back and forth, it cannot be thrown, etc. Each woman walks at a different speed. A pair must walk together at the rate of the slower woman's pace.

Woman 1: 1 minute to cross
Woman 2: 2 minutes to cross
Woman 3: 5 minutes to cross
Woman 4: 10 minutes to cross

For example if Woman 1 and Woman 4 walk across first, 10 minutes have elapsed when they get to the other side of the bridge. If Woman 4 then returns with the flashlight, a total of 20 minutes have passed and you have failed the mission.

For a true riddle, try this one:

A hundred and one
divided by fifty, followed by nothing:
one of nine.

Woman 1 takes woman 2 across(2 min) Woman 1 comes back(1 min) Woman 3 and 4 cross(10 min) Woman 2 comes back over(2 min) and takes Woman 1 over(2 min)...so, lets see if I did that right 2+1+10+2+2=17...Ahhh...finally, that took a bit of work, that was good...now my head hurts....lol

Great riddle citahellion,

A hundred and one

The answer is Clio, the Muse of history.

Start with roman numerals...

101 = CI
"divided by fifty" means physically shove them apart with L (50), not perform math. Hence, CLI
Nothing is zero, or 0. So, to follow CLI with 0 gives us CLI0, or Clio, the Muse of history.

There are nine Muses of which Clio is one.

Bingo.

Let me go poke around for another riddle.

A man comes to a bridge that crosses a large ravine. The bridge has a maximum capacity of 200 lbs. The man weighs 190 lbs. and he is carrying three 5 lb. bowling balls. The ravine is too far to throw, roll, or float the balls across, yet he crosses the bridge with all three balls in a single trip. How?

ok, i think i have it ... literally, the the highlighted text means that the man weighs 190 pounds already laden with the 3 x 5-pound balls ? (ie: the man weighs 190 pounds and he is carrying three 5-pound bowling balls) ... which would mean the man himself only actually weighed 175 pounds, making him still under the bridge limit.

i hope you're not laughing at me. hehe.

did i get it gene ? did i ? did i ?

mig: No, you didn't get the bowling-ball/bridge puzzle. Nice try, though.
The standard answer is that he juggled the bowling balls, which would mean that only two were in his hands at any given time, thereby achieving the 200-pound restriction.
Of course that wouldn't actually work because the amount of energy you have to impart to the balls to juggle them would effectively make you weigh more than 200 again, but that's still the standard answer.
By the way, bowling balls bottom out (here in the US, anyway) at 8 pounds. Any lighter and they're not effective enough at knocking things over.

Here's a classic...
Thirty white horses upon a red hill;
First they champ, then they stamp, then they stand still.

my second sealess one

Poor men have it

Little whips is EASY --- the answer is Nothing (but uncomplete because the way I've always seen it written like this

The Poor have lots of it
The Rich don't need it
More evil then the Devil
Better then God
and if you eat it you die

ie nothing - there's nothing more evil then Satan, the poor have nothing, the rich don't want for anything and if you eat nothing you die.

And that my friends was pretty much the only riddle i ever knew -- except the one about St Ives (and the ones in Batman Forever)
As I was going to St Ives
I met a man with 7 wives
Each wife had 7 sacks
Each sack had seven cats
Each cat had seven kits
Kits, cats, sacks & wives
how many were going to St Ives??
