bad video?

i just got the game friday and have not been able to play.
after some intro screens, i get multicolored dotted not-quite-horizontal lines and here something that sounds like a high tech door opening.
i've read faq's, downloaded and installed updates (and bink tools), ran dxdiag (no problems) and killed as many TSRs as i could.
my fairly recent winxp system won't go above 1024X768 (old 'arcus' monitor).
is there a minimum resoulution to galciv? do i need more video ram (and how do i check how much i've got?)?

another disappointed MOO3 purchaser trying to get his space TBS game fix - thanx for any input!

Hi Meaty. Not sure of the exact fix for your problem. But please try the stardock link on the left of ths forum. Clicking on this will take you to the stardock page where you will find a link for support. If this does not help then i would suggest emailing CariEff on CariElf with a description of your problem. If anyone can help you she should be able to.

Sorry i  cant help futher. Hope you get your copy of this excelent game running.

Feel free to stop by the Diplomats Galiv forums too ( http://diplomats-empire.com ). You can find a great help and support section there run by Peace Phoenix.

The minimum resolution for Gal Civ is 1024 x 768, so that should be fine. It could be something wrong with your copies of the bik files or else a codec on your system that's interfering with it.  Do you have WinDVD or QuickTime installed on your system? Sometimes they try to take over the .bik files associations and that generally causes problems. You can reclaim the associations by downloading the bink tools at http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm

Whoa you mean you had no video memory of any kind before? Ouch, even my oldest video card has two megs. Yeah green rocks and orange spiky things both hatch monsters, you can lead them into enemy territory and they wreak havoc to their fleet.
