JTar, glad you enjoy the game. Trust me when I tell you that you'll enjoy it alot more if you join an empire. As suggested above, use the empire tab on the left nav-bar to access the empire thread. You don't have to be a member of an empire to read the respective threads.

I encourage you to scan some of the empire threads, as it will give you an idea of what each empire (and their members) are like. My biggest regret is not joining an empire sooner.

Either way will work. The expansion plays exactly the same, just adds a couple of new races, and also adds a mission based version of play. I would reccommend you upgrade at some point, but it is not VITAL to do so now.

EDIT:
I would be remiss if I failed to mention updates etc. available through Stardock Central for both Galciv and AP. I don't believe there is a graphics update with AP, but I can't be certain of that.

Exactly.

You dont need it but it increases the fun.

For right now you could work on basic stratagies and then after getting AP work on modifications.

There are also many mods available in the library that may suit you fancy.

I would recommend updating to the latest version. Stardock has made a ton of improvements since version 1.2

If you plan to get the AP pack you may as well get it now. The AP has a few new features that you might like such as campaign and scenerios a couple of extra races, some new ships. The scoring has been tweaked so that you get slightly more score than the standard version of galciv.

If you are not sure about Galciv then perhaps you should stay with the v1.2x and find out if you like it or not.
