Least time research

Am still on beginner so I don't know what the future will bring. I have sorted my techs by "Least Time" and researched 125 tech last time. I've found the other races will gladly trade techs with me and they never seem to have more than one or two I don't have. Have I found a way to stay on top tech wise, on the cheap? Let me know your experience!
