Ga;axy Size Difficulty

I was wondering what galaxy size most people regard as the easiest/hardest and why. I've played small games and done pretty well, but in medium I always seem fall short of (at least one of the) computer players' expansion. I hesitate to go to a larger map, but it occurs to me that a larger map may give me room to grow a little more and keep up with the CPs. What do y'all think?

I played my first complete game on Gigantic.. it does give you more room to grow, but the AIs grow that much more, too. Yet the distances between you can mean that circumstances befall some of your enemies long before they can touch you.

And I imagine it's hard to get to see all of the races before they drop out of the game. In my game, the Torians got wiped out before I could find them.

I tried doing a map on huge with loose clusters. I have a nice little corner all to myself. I was doing quite well with no visitors. I had to go to war due to the Torrian's getting voted a planet nearby that was not habitable before. I took the planet with a transport and have been at war ever since with everyone.

I spend every turn fighting off battlecruisers, battleships and dreadnoughts with my lone ranger (given by a lucky event) and some desperate defending with battleaxes. Computer seems to have advanced in ships very quickly, but not much else. I'll have to remember that for next game. Go for the big ships and ignore all other advances.

I've played on a medium map with loose clusters, but ended up in one corner separated by a large divide from the other races. The Drengin pretty much cleaned up but with me being so far away, I couldn't do much to stop it.
