Trade Vs. Tax

Today in a game I was doing quite well Culturally and was starting to have planet after planet defect to my flag....but as my existing trade routes were becoming extinct...my income was heavily being eaten away. Luckily the game ended with a cultural victory when it did because I had a -1600 income. ( This I had no way of undoing short of destroying a dozen or so colonies ) Trade is good...but how can trade income triple tax income. ??

I have a problem where I have maybe 9 trade routes makeing such a profit that I can have 100% government spending and still make a profit. However, as soon as I start building ships and start taking planets over through military take over and cultural take over, I start to loose trade routs. Since I am taking over the planets that I trade with. This leads me into a negative profit at each turn even though I cut government spending. How do you make up for this loss of trade routes?

This may not be your problem, but I personally used to have a thing for "if it's there, build it". In this game you cannot build every improvement on every planet, even the ones that help morale. You just can't sustain that kind of expense without trade. Be choosy about what you build. Every morale improvement I built helped my economy as well except for entertainment network and harmony generator. After that, I wait for Stadium and Teleporters. There's a couple others as well that dont just suck your money.
