Why my civ failed?

Right off I populated every yellow star near me, and built a starbase on 1 military, 1 influence, and 4 moral mines. After about I'd say 1/3rd through the game I had all my starbases mining fully and I single-handedly a bit more than half the vote in the senate and all others civs combined couldn't outvote me when it started happening. Each turn morale went down a couple points, so I'd knock off a few points of taxation and spending to keep it above 50%, next turn the same thing and again I'd lower taxes and lower spending to compensate, turn after turn after turn until after about 20 turns I was at 0 taxes, my moral was crap, and no way out of the hole.
The only thing I can think of is I let the Dread Lords happen and they did a number on every other civ but I was so far away they weren't bothering me... I was trading a lot of wonders for ships to supply them. Is that the problem? The Dreadlords?
