MoM2: please lose the angels and demons

I think some people will refuse to buy the game if you leave them in, and it may affect the game's rating. I know I, personally, am uncomfortable with letting my kids play a game that includes demon summoning. Just what do demons have to do with necromancy, anyway? It seems to me that the game could be just as fun to play if these units were replaced by some other good (Ki-Rin, gold dragon) and undead (vampire, liche, ghost) units. Look at Age of Wonders for a MoM-style game without the demons (although they left angels in the game).

Of course, to play devil's advocate ;), maybe a nice controversy is just what Stardock needs to sell a sequel to a ten-year-old game. Just look at the free publicity that "JFK reloaded" game is getting.

I guess the question from a business point of view is which way the game would gain more customers (or lose fewer). I'd argue that a lot more people will be turned off by the demons than will be angered by their deletion.

I have to strongly disagree. It is a afterall a 'fantasy' game, to ban demons and angels, especially if it is on Judeo-Christian religous grounds is just plain silly. Who is to say what mythical creatures or other fantastic races are not offensive to other groups?

This is going to be a little tongue-in-cheek, what if someone argues against having a race of 'dwarves' or 'halflings' because those are deragotory terms to the 'height' challenged. Once your start banning something where does it stop? If you are uncomfortable letting your kids play, simple do not let them play the game.

Demons and Angels do not exist in the real world. Its a fantasy game so it seems like a good fit. If Demons are scary for kids, wouldn't Vampires and Skeletons be scary too? Personally, I'm kind of scared of pit bulls and religious nuts who own guns.

I doubt there are a large number of people who are in the market for a fantasy game with magic and wizards and undead, but would refuse to buy one with demons. In fact, before I read the original post in this thread I would have said that there were zero such people. It reminds me of the people who want to ban Harry Potter for teaching kids about witchcraft. Most of them are totally outside the target audience.

To make some happy I suggest making it so one can disable groups/factions/etc like you can in AP.

Interesting post, obviously you feel strongly about this and I can respect that however I don't really understand it. I will try and tread lightly so not as to offend.

I think if you are concerned but interested in the game; and you want to share the experience with your kids then you need to be responsible and supervise them playing it. Judge their reaction to the ideas in the game and talk to them if you don't like the reaction. let them make up there own minds afterall it is only a game but guide them and get peace of mind that they know that.

If you are concerned about your child well being, turning a blind eye / censorship may not be the best answer. Maybe this isn't possible or I'm way off hopefully it gives you some pause in your current thinking.

I myself would prefer both good and evil to be equally represented otherwise whats the point?

DaveV, have you played Heroes of Might an Magic 3 or 4? Because it is a fantasy TBS with possibility to buy Angel and Demons.

DaveV,
I assume that if there is enough demand someone will create a mod for the game removing or changing these creatures (if they are in). You should then be able to download the mod and, voila, the offending creatures will be removed.

Huh? Video games have no relationship to the real world. There are no REAL demons in our world! I do not agree with you at all I know there are many who feel as you do. I just do not understand how you come to this conclusion. It is not dipicting real life in any way. Nor does it tell any child to worship satan or any nonsense. LOL

The idea that a video game can influence someone is just silly! When some kid claims that a video game inspired him to commit the crime it is simply an excuse used by this kid to get out of trouble if he can. If someone is influenced by a game or a movie they are unstable to begin with and anything could spark the same desires. Video games are all fantasy no reality at all is in them! :p

IMHO, I think most people will be able to tell the difference between fictional game characters and fictional characters from the real world...which, as I write it down, I realise is a very interesting paradox.

The only demons we have are the ones we create for ourselves...by sinning for instance, or by demonising a game and believing it would actually influence people that much, even young people.
On that end, there are other games that worry me a lot more, to be honest...

There are no games that will influence anyone! Nor movies for that matter! The only people who are influenced by games or movies are unstable individuals to begin with. It is the person who has the issues and anything can set it off. I really am tired of people trying to blame other things for what they do in their lives. :D

OMG, Somebody slap me! I can't believe what I'm hearing. I'm an old school gamer, and have played just about everything out there. I have never found a game as exciting, addictive, or have the ability to be differant everytime I play it as MOM. Please the powers that be, make my dream come true. Bring back my favorite game of all time! Please leave its simplicity, juice up its graffics, make it playable online, add more worlds, increase the AI, more wizards, hero's, magic items, and MONSTERS!!!!!, But please leave the game system the same. I can't even play this game anymore, but I know from experience that many followers of this jondra would love this game. It would be a hit!!!!!!!!!!!

Um. How did Doom-3 do in the sales department?

Next real question: How much of those sales can be attributed to advertizing dollars?
