Authors Note: This really turned out to be a piece in which I pictured myself at a place in life I really hope to get to. Or maybe a vision that I would find acceptable if I ever achieved it.....though many, may not consider such an existence an "achievement." thanks for reading.
Hold our peace eternal,
that one day,
my son,
who was delivered to me by a desperate neighbor
can look down secluded streets
with overwhelming possibility,
healthy dosage of arrogance and
just a day older than naive.
Our front porches will seem to stretch across the street,
to front doors,
and unattached garages
where loud tools are heard just as often as
broken notes from high school angst driven fingers on
handed down fenders and epiphones.
We build,
we break,
we burn marshmallows in the alley over the rusted black grill,
we dispense drinks,
late nights,
and early morning daily news
bantering to the smell of freshly mowed lawns
only 100 sqare feet,
I pay $10 to the broken note playing sophomore
playing at the coffee shop tomorrow night,
no cover,
tips accepted and appreciated.
I don't order,
"the usual" greets me at the counter
presented by the cute owner taking night classes
taking in my less than subtle glances
with large grains of salt
accompanying feuds of cribbage, chess, and scrabble,
we applaud,
leave an hour later than planned
bike back the 12 blocks
to the 100 square feet,
but it takes me 30 blocks cause
there are curbs to step up,
gaps to jump,
working off coffee shop cookies,
and burning caffeine,
work is in 7 hours,
but he needs help with homework,
and I became useful.
