What games inspired the creation of GalCiv?

How much has other games influenced GalCiv? The research tree is very similar to Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, and the race evilness scale is from D&D. Not to scream plaigarism or anything like that (genius deserves to be copied!), but how much from the game has been lifted or inspired by Master of Orion or Starships Unlimited?
Also, though they are pretty much different kinds of games, what do you guys think of STUN (Starships Unlimited) as compared to Galactic Civilizations?

STUN is much more simplistic, more repetitive, and worse graphics than GC.

As for inspiration, I was under impression that the game is based on the game with the same name that has been made in 1993 for OS/2.
