Star Trek: Birth of the Federation

I would like to know something if it's possible... Did someone play "ST:BotF", and if you did, how would you compare it with GalCiv?
Peace :d

I Love birth of the federation its my best turn based game but not sure how better GC is than it as I am just about to start playing it after 4 days of downloading it from stardock on 56k modem grr lol.

The people who made both games should join both games together because there are things in BOTF that should be in GC and viser versa. Like for instance the battles in BOTF there 3d battles this should be in GC and the detail of the game in GC should be in BOTF.

If combined it would make the best turn based game ever I think.

Oh and more ships which maybe if possible the ships shape and size power could be created from scratch buy the player like in the ship designer in a startrek game ive seen not just parts you put together.

But guess it will never happen. :notsure:

I completly agree with you!
But, there is one thing in BOTF that killed me - I COULD NEVER DESTROY THE BORG!!! They always ruined everything... And I didn't want to start in the upper levels of technology. I wanted to beat them from the beggining, but... Failed. :notsure:

And yes - the two of them combined would be a hell of a game! :HOT:

Although it was a loooong time ago i'm not convinced BOTF was that great. All I remember was loading it up and thinking, "man master of orion has way more gameplay," so I returned it(back when you COULD return games LOL ) and never looked back. Both of your fond memories are making me wonder about my decision though :notsure:

I really enjoyed BOTF alot. In fact I still have it loaded on my secondary hard drive. And you're right the Borg ruined a number of games for me. The best aspect was that all of the minors had specials associated with them as well as all of the majors. Plus, you could play any of the major races. I really enjoyed the Federation and the Klingons. :)

Hi Moser the Alchemist (ret.),

just a short off topic question. Can you explain me why some users have "(retired)" and "(active)" attached to their alias?

Thanks

Ive had 5 hours of gameplay on GC for the first time and I think its great very soon I will get the add on AP.

P.S BOTF I altered the ship weapons and shields etc for all races so each ship has exact power it should have and dosent fire 50 torpedoes on first attack now its more like 2-4 if anyone wants my mod leave a message here or email me and ile send it to you.

THE BORG ARE SLIGHTLY EASIER TO KILL BUT STILL POWERFULL. ;)

I played as good human and never attacked first. But when someone destroyed my first ship, I tried to fight back as hard as I could during war. But never attacked planets. You know, I didn't want to kill civilians... :sniff!:
What is your tactic during war in GalCiv?

For my first game defence and build attack ships on every planet to build up big force then ask the to end war if not attack there ships first which may worry them losing ships everywhere so they ask for peace. :CONGRAT: ;) LOL

I added retired to my name to let the people below me on the metaverse ladder know that I'm not submitting games anymore. As to why someone would add "active" to their name, you'll have to get an answer from them.

BoTF was a great game for its time. Though after turn 150-200 it became really laggy. And ruined many great games. But i like the battles and it was easy to jump in and play.

I just bought GCD, and only played 2 small games thus far and i have enjoyed myself. Though if it had battles like BoTF i would be in heaven :)

BoTF,Imperium Galactica 2,MOO2, Star Wars Rebellion are my favorite space strategy games. And GC is just about on that list once i play with it a little more.

Exalted Druid added "active" to his name so that people would know that he was active.

You can avoid wars in galciv if you wish. It is not a a something you have to do. You can play a totally diplomatic game and use your culture/influence to win the game. Though this technique may be a bit boring, if you set it for military conquest only you will get the highest scores using this technique. If you keep all victory conditions checked this would end up being a Culture win. :D

I perfer to dominate with sheer power, and if some alien scum wants to attempt a war I will of course go for it. Otherwise I exploit the hell of them all and slowly put the squeeze on them economically at first, then with culture. I also like pay other races to attack my rivels. Always entertaining way to get rid of your enemies! :HOT:

Hope to see you at NeoTech http://www.neotechgaming.com/portal.php?sid=2ecd9994d30f785aa7e8d22559148d68 a Starbase for Galciv fans - plus a lot more

And to all of you: don't be too cruel to the aliens! ;)

One question more: what's the percentage of girls playing GalCiv? It seems to me that game fans are 100% guys? Or am I wrong? Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking for a date or something, and I'm not a sexist, I'm just interested. This game is preety interesting for male and female, right?
Or can I find the answer somewhere else too, DFox? :)
Just kidding...

Well, a year ago, Free Tibet was the top player of the metaverse. And she is a girl :)

BotF was pretty good. however colony management sucked (if you colonize a world late in the game or conquer a heavily destroyed one you have to build and upgrade all the buildings from level 1 up to 10. takes way too long). the battles were ok, tho options and graphics were weak. I missed the option to design the ships myself compared to MoO2.

then there was this memory leak that caused a big slowdown later on (even with the latest patch it was better but not fixed). turns in large games took ages to process during the endgame.

multiplayer with it still was fun.

you could defeat the borg. As a Romulan you could throw a whole fleet of Warbirds at them and you had a good chance of destroying them in the first attack (first strike due to cloaking). with some luck you could do it with the klingons large bird of prey too.

without cloaking you needed a lot of ships. then your only chance was a suicide ramming attack. worked pretty well, but was expensive.

Yes, those are for sure among the top-ten.

What I liked about BOTF was how borders were respected (at least during peace time). I also liked how all the ships moved at the same time. :)

I would definitely be interested in that mod. While I love BOTF (I actually still play it quite a bit), it always irritated me how all the ships, even Federation ships, had way too much firepower. The average vessel in BOTF could deal out damage 2-3 times what it could take! That's just not right. :p

Once you have Construction 7 (and some others that vary by organization), every 'race' had something that could take down Borg Cubes alone, although some of them might need a little luck. High Energy tech levels never hurt. As the Federation, I tend to use Galaxy-X crusers, although Defiant class heavy escorts would probably work better.

Mmmm, Defiant-class heavy escorts..... [drools] :d I love those things! I will admit, however, that even given their expense and high tech requirements to build, Defiants are still one of the most overpowered vessels in the game. And yes, they are among the most effective anti-Borg weapons available to the Feds--or anyone else, for that matter. Having said that, I still prefer to take out cubes with a dozen Romulan Warbirds and R'tan-class stike cruisers. ;)

You probably played without the patch. This has been corrected and the Borgs appear only when you can beat them...it's still difficult, but with 2 armadas of Command ships and one of escort ships you can do it. ;) So get the patch if you want to play again
