Assertiveness + Neutrality = Pain!!

Bear with me in my story of woe.... :)

I've been working my way up in GalCiv, started out doing a cakewalk getting to know the system... I decided it was time to try something a little harder. I set the Five races to Sub-Normal figuring this would still be a walk in the park, and on-top of that I set them all to 'Good' Societies.
All my games to this point had been culture victory, so I figured I would do the same thing here... I start out and colonise a fair portion of the Galaxy, start pumping out constructors while working on some culture tech. Things are pretty ho-hum, I encounter some aliens and they start making demands of me which I reject. After taking a good slice off a couple of Altaran Sectors with some culturally Upgraded Starbases they suddenly start making some ridiculous demands then go to war.. I'm still thinking things are okay...

Next turn the Torians are sending me messages saying We are declaring war on you... Ouch! Attacked from both sides.. Five turns later I get the 'Cuddly' Drengin (They ARE Good in this Game!) attacking me from below.
It turns out that my neutrality (44?) had gotten to be a little to much like evil for these opinionated AI, and they all declared war on me, Me being the personification of EVIL itself!! NOooooO!!!

Well, My Walk in the Park turned into a Six Hour Retreat back to my home system where I was thoroughly crushed by merciless aliens saying 'You're Getting you're ass whiped' and Laughing at me... Smug little Bastards!

Anywayz, I think I'm going to try being posiviely angelic... and perhaps research some aggresive techs off the bat next time round. :) But really I'm after a little sympathy... I'll accept empathy too... A few words of encouragement b4 I'm back in the fray? ;)

Heh. Ran into a similar problem. My morality was neutral, I allied with the Torians to wipe out the evil Yor and Drengin, decided to go for an allied victory. Handed over LOADS of stuff to the Altarians (ships, $$, tech, even some newly conquered systems), but they never got past friendly. Eventually, they declared war on my allies who had slipped to neutral morality. The Altarians were too damn snobbish to ally with neutrals, apparantly. So the Torians and I had to fight a long, painful war to push the Altarian snobs back into a corner and wipe them out.

you do need to have good miltary rating also.. other wise good empires will see you as push overs for evil influences so for the good of all must erradicate you fist :)

...and it's not like your attempts at cultural domination went unnoticed either. I mean, the AI (though maybe not at subnormal...) can see what you're doing by placing starbases right next to all their territory and whatnot...

I love it when u have a majority of influence in the UP, and they bring resolutions like 'restricting the number of modules on starbases in enemy sectors' or 'taxes for starbases in enemy sectors' ...Gets me grinning when I have culturally loaded bases spread over the map taking them out system by system. :) Feeble 'Good' Races! UP? Bah!

My last few games i have been neutral all the way through, i was constantly at war, the evil Civs thought i was goody-goody, the Good ones thought i was evil..made the game much harder, i got less from trades too. Guess ill stick with one or the other, and not neutral :d

I had this happen to me in a game in which I made all the races' morality random. The Drengin declared war on me for being "evil" despite the fact that I'd taken the good path every time it'd come up, but my morality was still "neutral." That and the fact that I had to wipe out the only other good race (the Yor) because they got the "becoming a superpowerful race that will wipe everyone out" event.
