There are a few really nice mods around, created by Chippoka.
In the Mods section you will find a link those mods. There is a conversion of the WhiteStar mdl - now it has colour identifcations for the different races.
Also note the mine-mdls, which have really really good energy-animations around them.
I am posting this here since the mod-section seems pretty dead sometimes, and i think these mods are really worth a look.
