Can't seem to keep a positive number in my treasury, please help

I've had the game for about a week, and I understand the basic gameplay concepts. What I don't get is why after a few turns (after building 2-3 colony ships with mitrosoft)
my treasury is depleted and in the negatives. No amount of ajusting the tax rate or spending can yield a positive profit either. What am I doing wrong? I'm looking for a basic walkthrough, like the one in the manual (which I followed exactly, and ran out of money just the same) that can help me. Thanks in advance.

At the beginnins of the game, adjust the three sliders so that all is going into military. This will build your colonizers. Adjust the spending rate to 100% and the tax rate until the approval rating just drops below 100% and then back it up to be 100%. This will give you the best starting point. You should be able to play at these setting through colonization.

After colonization, move the military spending to zero and the research to 100% and research the bassic starting items. Look in the strategies forum (see button on the left) to see what some people do. I research with setting set for least number of months, first communications, then translaters, then medicine, then industry, then diplomacy, then trade, then tourism, (these last two, many leave out) then basic environmental. By now you should have either discovered or been discovered by major AI or minors. Trade what you have at each turn during this research phase for any that the AI or minors produce. You may be able to get half of the above for only researching half of them. You get more from the minors than from the majors.

Keep learning. lots of different stratigeis. Have fun.

You are rush building. Use what PB said above.

That is a very bad idea for the treasury. Better 100% spending with 100% military to get a colony ship every 3 turns.

When you go to the domestic screen, I think it is third from the right on the bottom Nav-bar, you will find a screen with 2 horizontal slide bars on the top left, and 3 vertical sliders on the bottom left. These are your spending sliders. The ones on the top control how much you want to tax your people and how much of this income you want to spend. (As noted above, set the spending rate to 100%, and the tax rate to the highest rate that will maintain 100% morale {use the planet button, I think it's second from the left on the bottom Nav-bar, and then use the arrows on the top to move the list heading over to morale. This will list your planets according to morale.}) The sliders on the bottom are how you control the division of your spending between Military, Social, and Research spending. Set the military to 100% and the other two to 0%. In this way, you'll be able to crank out colony ships every 3 turns until the initial planet rush is done.

It would be wise to mointor your spending rate (you'll be losing money during this time) and when done building colony ships, adjust you sliders to suit your tastes. The description PB gave above is one of many ways to start off.

When you buy anything it costs e.g. (for a Colony Ship)

350BC + 16BC for 8 months

Thas means that you pay 350 immediately and 16 BC for the next 9 (that's strange but Stardock counts very often like this :SURPRISED: ) month.

This costs much more than building it with the regular production capacity. This costs only 50BC for a colony ship (check the explanation how to do this from above).

It's very rare that I buy something. e.g. when a colony flipped to me, after self-destroying all improvements, I sometimes buy an Entertainment Network or an Colony Ship to avoid that the system defects.
