Question about Mods

Do all Mods come with a built-in penalty to some ability? I was kind of thinking that Mods were kind of like using the cheat keys ..cheating by creating extra bonuses is akin to just [enter cheat code]=free $$$. I'm not trying to diss on people using mods! It just seems to me its a form of cheating.

p.s. by Mods I'm talking about mostly Political Party mods.

Anyone enlighten a n00b on this?

Mods can have pluses and minuses. Those that are approved are balanced as much as possible. Remember that any mod can be used by the AI, so if it benefits you, it will proably benefit the AI so it is hard to generate a mod that only benefits you.

All the AI can use your own Political party?? Whoa. Didn't know that, heh. So making a SuperPolParty wouldn't benefit you at all since every other civ would also use it, right? Gotcha.

What about Events and such? All the others would get those too? Ships? I'm assuming they'll get Techs of course.

The Mod's, once installed, are available to all the AI as well as the player. At least all the Mod's I know of.

I use a Political party called Research Inc. This particular party is, like any other party, able to be chosen by ANY race. The reason that the AI VERY sledom pick it is that while it gives you a nice bomus to research, diplomacy, and PQ, it also Gives Large negative bonuses (if that makes sense) to HP, Defence, and I think attack as well. The theory behind this party was that the AI would not pick it because of the huge penalties to the military. The penalties can be overcome by being a smart briber/trader.

Yes, that sounds like the thing to do since most all strats I have read sound like they don't use military at all until maybe at the end. So negative hp and att wouldn't hurt them. I think I wanna a Party that gives good bonuses to pq and diplo ..and perhaps trade? with major negatives to hp and att and such cause I don't think I'll be using those that much anyways.

You need to be careful - too much bonus, particularly PQ and (iirc) economics, will mean a game doesn't score in the metaverse.

Well, I will rely on Stardock approved mods which I assume will be Metaverse compatible. Any suggestions for a good +diplo +pg +eco -hp -att Political Party?

Sweet! And I can get said Mod from the Library thingy, yes? (Here I am getting Mods for a game I haven't even gotten yet ..ETA is prolly about a week!) But ..on a different note: I seem to be kicking major buttockal regions in the demo applying some strats I researched in these awesome Forums! :CONGRAT:

Oh hey, I did have one question: I had read somewheres on here that you could have a max of 10 trade routes (not counting bonuses for ..whatever) right? Well, I can only get 3 so far ..keeps saying I've reached the max. I'm guessing there is some other Tech to get alllllll the rest of them?

You can get UP to 10, not more than 10. And these are like gold. They will not only give you income every turn, they are like an umbilical cord to another civ. If you have a trade route to another civ, if they go to war with you, they will lose the income from your trade route + the income from how ever many routes they have with you.

My general rule for trade routes is to send 1 freighter each to each major civ as soon as I research the trade tech, and park the freighter next to the planet unless I have an available route AND they rank highly in military strength.

As for the mod, you'll find it under the misc. tab in the library (I think it's on page 3 or 4). BTW, head on over to the empire page and scan the various empire forums...find one that you like, and join it. There are some nice benefits to being in an empire.

I wasn't aware you could actually join an Empire before you submitted scores and such from the Metaverse thingy. My copy of GalCiv DE is on order from Amazon.com and should arrive in the next week sometime or so ..been playing the demo of Galciv.

Well, its gotta be all good ...I'm whipping up on 'em in the demo with all you guys' strats implemented (thanks guys! :CONGRAT: ) and if I can then pick some more bonuses?? Course having said this, i'm playing on Subnormal/tiny/rare/tight ..not the most challenging I'm sure! heh.

I personally never play Galciv at all without a Mod installed. I use Icho Tolot Mods exclusively because of the sheer number of new things it adds to the game.

You need to learn the game all over again using his Mods but it will be a good time.
I began on subnormal myself..I finally worked my way up to normal. Will be venturing to challenging soon.

I used to play Gigantic maps but now I play for the Empire.. I play mainly on Huge maps. I can finish one in about 5-8 hours and get a good score.

Some Mods are bad as they will give you bonuses and give the AI the same. Others will not be to bad if they have high negative values for military. AI tend to avoid those, but even then they still will take the same Mods your using no matter what. :)
