What are leases? (And a couple other related questions.)

Are these things that you sell to another race who then pays for them over a period of time? I have noticed that you earn more money in the long run using this strategy, is that generally correct?

Does every race pay the same amount for each tech or item? (Like a starfighter costs 5/turn for 20 turns for every race?)

Is there a difference in how much you can get for an item based on how many payments you will take? (For instance, if I can sell a star fighter for 5/turn for 20 turns could I possibly sell it for 1/turn for 110 turns?)

I guess I am looking for some guidelines on how I should rig my sales.

Thanks.

Leases are when you rush build an item and pay monthly interest on it. When you sell things to other races for a monthly payment that is called tribute and will show up in your economic information. As far as the amount of payment you can get a item it'll depend on your relations with them and how your alignment compares to theirs. And I believe distance may also be a factor in selling units.

"Leasing" typically refers to GalCiv's method of rush-building social/military projects. When you click "Purchase" you'll be presented with 4 different payment options. One is the standard cash-now method, while the other three are varying forms of leasing, allowing you to pay less up front, but requiring longer duration payments in return.

The trade questions that you raised are typically considered a form of tribute. For the record, the term for selling trade goods to other races is "licensing". Answers to your questions, in the order you asked them:

- yes, you earn more money if you ask for less but stretch it out over more time. While this tactic has been somewhat nerfed by the updates, it is still generally true. It's simply good economics.

- yes.

- Ash

- no; different AIs value different items differently, and your relationship with that race will affect how much it is willing to pay you for anything.

Yes, you can generally get more over time than up front.

Note that the AI doesn't usually look more than 20 cycles ahead, so don't expect much beyond 20 turns.

The color of the offer will clue you into the likelihood of acceptance. Green is definite yes; yellow is maybe (in my case, it's always been no).

Figuring out what to sell, to whom, and for how much is a big part of the game. Remember that there are some techs you may never want to sell; I never sell techs that give a diplomatic advantage. Some won't sell advanced ship designs (I generally don't either). Also remember that once you sell a tech, it may get sold to others.

Tweak the deals and stay in the green. I try to always shoot for 20 months and get as much as I can.

20 months? Hmmm...ok, I'll keep that in mind. So is a viable strat to lease a ship to get it built quick and then sell it to another race and get more from them than you are paying yourself? Or does that not work?
