Need help on the game

I'm relatively new to this game and I must be doing something wrong when it comes to ship costs. The average price of a starfighter is somewhere in the range of 500+ credits and my annual income at the highest was about 40bc.

Could someone tell me how to keep the ship costs lower? I don't know what I did, but in one turn I had managed to get the cost of a fighter down to 8 credits, but that only happened once. Then the price shot back up a few hundred. If someone could give me some advice I'd really appreciate it, thanks.

You should not buy ships or improvements. This is very expensive.

Build them instead. To do so you have to adjust the sliders on the economy screen. There is one sliders for taxes, one which controls the total amount of spending and underneath there are three sliders to allocate you spending:
"Military" = Ship construction
"Social" = Improvement building
"Research" = Research

When you set Military and Total spending to 100% you can e.g. build a colony ship every three turns.

Check the Encyclopedia (button on top) and the strategy forum for more information. There are also beginner's guides on the fan sites.

End of quote

The cost you see is the cost for rushbuying, ie complete with BC from your treasury the project, instead of waiting the planet to build it. Be warned that rushbuyed social improvement are available in the same turn, but for military project, it is the next turn. So there isn't any need to rushbuy a military impromvemnt that will be completed the next turn.
