Cumulative Planetary Defenses

Does anyone know if I build planetary defenses on multiple planets within one system, are they cumulative- or is it only one 33% boost no matter how many planets have it?

Sorry if the question has been asked-answered, but I couldn't find the info.

Thanks

Colony improvements generally only apply to the colony itself (i.e. that planet, not that star). The few exceptions to this are some of the wonders which affect your whole empire.

I think what CnP is asking is if one planet in a system with 2 colonies with a def. of 100 builds PDs defence jumps to 133 then what does the second PD do?does it double (66%=166)or does it add 33% to the 133(33% of 133 is 44===177).
Or does the bonus only apply once per Star system?

My math may be off but you get the general idea--Im curious as well.

Generally all bonusses just add up.
So having multiple planets with a star is a big advantage. Same with multiple stars and multiple star bases in a sector.
At least that is my impression.

Perhaps my post wasn't clear enough.

"Colony improvements generally only apply to the colony itself (i.e. that planet, not that star)."

Those two Planetary Defense projects are on different colonies -- so they don't stack in any way, shape or form. Doesn't matter if they're around the same star, they're still different colonies, and the bonuses don't carry over. Build them on one and not the other, and only the colony they were built on gets any benefits.

Of course, at present I can't find any evidence that Planetary Defenses and the other defense projects actually do anything... the defense value listed on the Details screen for a colony doesn't change after building any of those projects (even the one that gives +100%).

Now, Starbase modifiers are a different matter...

So what you're saying Spinor, is if there is a system with three planets, just build planetary defenses on one planet. Since attacks come against the entire system, not individual colonies or planets, it would be a waste of time and expense.

Tventano- if there is info to the contrary- do you know of any documentation?

Thanks folks!

This may or may not actually be the case. Star Prestige (a.k.a. influence) bonuses on seperate colonies at the same system do stack. This may also be the case of Planetary Defense.

Spinor, that doesn't make any sense. Individual planets in a system are never attacked by starships, nor defended by them. All defence and offence occurs at the system level, so that's the only level it makes any sense for Planetary Defence to work at.

I think we're still at square one here... what happens if you have more than one Planetary Defence (which is effectively a "System Defence", since you can only garrison ships in the system, not around the planet) in a given system?

From what the in-game help says (and an off-hand comment in the manual in the section on invasions), Planetary Defense doesn't help the starships in orbit, it helps with ground invasions. Now, that still does leave the question of what happens with multi-planet systems.

Well if it helps in ground invasions, it makes sense (to me at least) that it pertains only to the planet in question.

Spinor:

"By scaling up the Shield Technology to planetary size, we have enhanced the defensive abilities of starships orbiting our planets. If our planets are attacked, our ships can remain behind the planetary defense and fire out. Incoming weapon attacks are partially dispersed by the fields, which lessens the damage inflicted on our starships."

So, again, back to square one.

Click on the question mark that shows up when you select it in the build queue :

"Planetary Defense provides a significant boost to our defense in the event of an invasion."

The Omega Defense project also only mentions invasion.

Also, page 19 of the manual, on invasions :

"But other factors do come into play such as the technology difference between civilizations, general soldier abilities on both sides and what planetary defenses have been constructed."

Ugh! Well I'm confused.

I believe the planetary defenses, Omega defense, etc, only works on ships in orbit. I have actually seen this in action - getting the crap pounded out of me by invaders, then watching them explode harmlessly once Omega is built. I have not noticed either of those affecting ground invasions.

But- it is clear that assaults always occur on the system level- never against a single colony- so I hate to say it (maybe its me) but I'm still not clear if the defense bonus of one colony applies to another WITHIN a single stary system (because if an attach is successful- all colonies/planets are captured).

Spinor, I strongly suspect you're splitting hairs unnecessarily.

I still don't get how invasions are calculated. I invaded a planet, all even bonuses with the opponent and had something like an 8-2 advantage. I thought you are supposed to get a *slight* advantage. I wish there was some hard core doc on estimating what you need for a successful invasion...

Well, I don't think so, Phaedyme... it's still not clear what Planetary Defenses _do_.

My reading of things has been that they don't help ships in orbit, but only help defending ground troops. This is a little hard to check though -- they don't seem to result in a noticeable change in stats for orbiting ships, but at the same time I haven't had any luck with getting the AI to invade me so that I can check the invasion advantages.

At this point, they seem so completely useless that I don't even bother researching the Planetary Defense tech until I need it as a prereq for Rangers. And I wouldn't even dream of building them...

Spinor, after researching and building them, my planets with orbiting battle hammers and battle axes become nigh-invulnerable.

Everything I can find to read on the topic of the planetary defenses indicates that it helps ships in orbit, and doesn't indicate that it has any effect on ground combat.

'I invaded a planet, all even bonuses with the opponent and had something like an 8-2 advantage. I thought you are supposed to get a *slight* advantage.'

It's randomly determined to a maximum set by your abilities and those of the AI. With all variable equal, you get a 3:2 advantage on the average, but the actual advantage in any individual invasion is luck unless you have an significant lead on the opponent in question.
