submit serial number through unsecure internet connection?

Bought Galactic Civilizations V 1.05 this week. Now want to update to V 1.2. I won't use stardock, so I need access to the patch download area on galciv.com. It says "enter email adress and serial number". But it seems not to be a secure connection (SSL encrypted) and I don't want to send my serial # this way. Is it okay if I X-out the last digits?

The serial will be checked to see if it is a valid serial Id. So I fear that you won't be able to do what you are suggesting.

I suppose that you won't use Stardock Central is due to the fact Galciv is on a computer that isn't connected to Internet with high speed.

I would think that Stardock Central would be better for downloading with a dialup modem because it supports file resume. Why don't you want to install Stardock Central? You'll get the latest version, more current than the standalone patch, and it will detect the files that you already have downloaded and only install the updated ones.

Three reasons for not going over Stardock Central:
- The PC where I play GalCiv has no Internet connection
- I use the German version. Not sure if Stardock supports this
- It may not solve the problem with the unsecure transfer of the serial number (did stardock use SSL?)

Meanwhile I found the German update to 1.2 at galciv.de (no serial number needed!) But no higher versions aviable there.

So my initial question remains: Any way to get to the download area without sending the full serial number through an unsecure internet connection?
Or shouldn't I care if someone could spy it???

Well if there's a version 1.2 on the german site, I don't think that's any older than the one that's currently on our website, and you'll probably want to continue to play with the translations.

You can use Stardock Central to update the German version, but then you may have English mixed in with the German.  You don't really have to worry about someone getting your serial number through either Stardock Central or the website.
