Do alliances ever expire?

In my first real game, here's the situation...

it's down to just myself and two other races. I have an alliance with the strongest race, and the strongest race also has an alliance with the weakest race.

I want to attack the weakest race, but don't dare do it with them currently being allied with the strong race.

Do alliances never expire in this game? I don't even have the option of asking the strong race to attack the weak race with me in the diplomacy screen. is there anything I can do?

Well, you can try to move lots of offensive ships in the weakest race sector. With luck, they will see this has dangerous and will attack. You mustn't fight back until you ally come to help you :)

You can also try to flipped planet to you with culture.

Or give techs to the weakest race to raise relation to close, make an alliance and end the game with an alliance win.
