Request for Suggestions:Military Strategic Options in Gal Civ

Am I the only one who is underwhelmed by military strategy in this game? Now before everyone goes off on this not being an RTS or tactical game, relax I'm not talking about that. The games that are often compared to Gal Civ has much more depth in their combat systems than does this game (civ3, etc.).
Right now there are no choke points, no real reason to use anything but the 'best' ship, and having a war is more about who was able to build the most ships rather than using any kind of strategic placement of those ships (other than the obvious things like protect space stations). I'd like to see a higher level of strategy placed into the military portion of this game. I find it boring.
I have one suggestion, but I'd like to hear yours and hopefully the developers will listen too. Here's mine:
Starbases have new modules that enforce zones of control. Basically non-allied ships (or perhaps add a new rule in diplomacy for movement through control zones) can either move directly towards or directly away from starbases if they enter their zone of control (which grows depending on the number of modules attached). This would create 'terrain' in the game. These zones of control would also apply to freighters, giving the player a choice of whether to blockade a system or create windows where ships can enter and leave. Just an idea.. Please treat my suggestion and this call for suggestions separately.. my suggestion may stink, but I think that something to make military strategy more interesting is needed.
