New technology and existing ships question

When I complete research on a new technology that gives my starships a new ability(better armor,weapons,etc)Do my existing ships recieve this upgrade?

And if not, do I need to put my ships in orbit in order for them to get the new upgrades?

yes, an increase in your abilities will be automatic (eg +10 to attack or defence will be effective immediately). no docking needs to be done
