Scissors paper stone

I wonder if different weapons types (beam, missile, energy etc), weapons ranges and shield types will play a part in ship combat at some stage? :)

I thought I heard one of them talking about some weapon that also damages ships in an area... might be for 1.x or even bonus pack :)

I wouldn't count on that. Such changes would require a fundamental rewrite of the AI. But down the line in some future sequel or something we can look at it.

I'm not so fond of the rock/scissors/paper approach. You end up having to trundle around with one each instead of just 3... errr... mud.

It'd be better (IMHO :) ) if there were techs that allowed the construction of corvettes that had significant boosts when attacking capital ships, or gave bonuses when defending against space sharks (damn those space sharks to heck (:( )

I have to admit, this is one of the few disappointing things with this game. Your military simply gets bigger and badder, with no real strategic choice as to which military unit to build.

Travathian,

I don't understand what you mean when you say "no real strategic choice as to which military unit to build.". Are you talking about Galciv or some other game.

What choices are there? With the addition of missiles, I guess there is. But as far as ships, why build anything but the best a particular planet can build in a reasonable amount of time. Therefore, all planets being equal, you'd always build the same ship.

I guess I'm comparing it to other games, with the rock, paper, scissors analogy previously stated. In GalCiv, its just rock, bigger rock, biggest rock.

While I do favour the approach of the MoO games of allowing you to design ships, or choose between various pre-made designs, there's still plenty of strategic choices to make with just the "basic" rock, bigger rock, approach.

Do you build a small number of VERY powerful ships and attempt to have them smack down enemy fleets by themselves? Do you build a decent number of slightly less powerful units and try to use enough of them to win each time? Do you build a large number of weaker units and attempt to flood enemy ships with an impossible number of attackers? Or even just attack so many systems simultaneously that you're bound to land some good hits?

There is a lot of scope at the moment for ship strategies. Remember that ships have a number of important attributes. These include attack, defense, cost, maintenance, range and speed. Bigger ships don't necessarily get bigger values in all these fields! Depending on your opponent and style of play you may want a variety of ships. I seldom ever find myself building the biggest ship all the time. Usually I build the ship designed for the job I want to do at the cheapest cost (if in a rush) or maintenance (if preparing). The game could do with a few more options at the upper level (Battleship+) but these will appear over time. I'd like

A defense only dreadnought trade offense for lower maintenance.

I have played many games of Galciv where the only ships I built were defenders, even though I eventually research the Avatar tech. Other games three or four capital ships are enough to deter other races from declaring war, or if they do declare war, from prosecuting it. The defenders are enough to keep transports from invading, and when needed, the few capital ships are enough to destroy the attack ships they might send after my defenders.

I use a strategy of strenth through technical superiority, not military superiority. Over the last few months I have yet to employ a millitary strategy to win a game.
