I am stupid. Newbie syndrome

I knew someone would look.

I am stupid because I didn't know that you could colonize a system in a sector that has minor races or opponents. I played 6 games staying only in my sectors with my colony ships. I was afraid to start a war. I take it this still holds true, I read it in the encyclopedia. Now I have to re-think my whole game strategy. This is the honest truth.

Now a stupid question, can you make starbases in alien sectors without getting the natives uspet?

Sometimes..Altough if they percieve it as a threat they will contact you demanding you to give them the Starbase..if you dont..well get ready for war ;)

The AI isnt all stupid, it can recognise when you are building forces up near him, or make a Party Palace star in his system

Thanks,

Ok for starbase I can understand, what about colonies? Are any empty star systems fair game for colonies under the present rules?

You can colonize anywhere...but make sure you keep your culture/influence up or you could lose the colony (on the other hand, if your culture/influence is strong you might take theirs).

I've had the AI demand that I dismantle a starbase that was in a sector where I shared the systems with them.

Also, there are United Planets proposals that tax colonies and starbases that don't belong to whomever controls the sector. These may come up if you try to expand into someone else's space.

If you are going for cultureal victory and can build up sufficient cash, one of the best tactics I've found is to infiltrate the border areas where there are 14PQ planets that the AI won't colonize. You can buy Soil, Habitat, and Entertainment to make them survive (they still pretty much suck) but it can give you the leverage you need to swing the sector influence to your favor and begin to covert planets.

I've NEVER had the AI say boo about it, even when going for the third sector in a row like this.

You aren't alone... I didn't realize this either! :(

Minor races still don't :D
Anyway, early threats of the AI when you encounter them and state that they 'have laid claim on these world' is just an empty threat :)

I must have been eating sardines (Mom always said it was brain food) because I just figured out what the last 2 numbers after the S in the ship list on the sidebar are. They are the sector the ship is in. Man this was bugging me. SO it's level, att/def/hp and sector. LOL WeeHoo!!
