Combat Summary?

OK, so last night I was caught in the "one more turn" syndrom and was realizing that I should probably be heading to bed when all of a sudden one of my starbases was attacked.
The starbase survived and destroyed the single attacking fleet. Thankfully I managed to spot where on the map this battle occurred before having my screen whisked away to another ship that was moving (yes, I have my screen following ship moves), however, I have the problem that I was not able to positively identify what type of ship and from what empire it was from. (Yes, I'm still a newbie, so I don't have every ship design memorized yey.)
Since I am not currently at war with anyone, this leads to a couple of major questions that I can't answer:
1) Who's ship was it? (Can the other races attack without declaring war? Was it a pirate? Was it some random event ship?)
2) What type of ship was it? (Was it a suicide scout or has someone else managed to research battleship tech?)
I realize that nobody here can answer those questions, but I wonder if there is some way, like a combat summary screen, that would allow me to get this information from the game?
As I said, I'm still new to the game, so maybe there is some nifty feature like this that I have missed so far. (Managed to stay out of wars for the most part.)
If not, I think it might be a handy thing to have at some point. Information like what attacked who and the results of those conflicts could be nice to have wrapped up in a single area rather than having to poll all of your ships individually.
