Transport Landing

Uhm, the serious newb here trying to invade a planet and not able to figure out how to get a transport to land. I've destroyed all ships in orbit around the planet but I can't seem to get my transports to land. Turn after turn goes by - I see that the pointer is on the planet so the transports should be going there, but they don't. This is my 4th game and the first game that I've managed my production well enough to go on the offensive. Now I am stuck behind a technical problem that is not letting me land?!?

BTW, I don't see a lot of info on Transports and what is a good number of troops to land to take a planet. The planet I'm invading has 4,000 citizens. I'm landing a force or 1,500 troops - is this sufficient? How do I know?

Thanks in advance.

A troop ship will only approach the enemy planets when all defensive ships are eliminated. So first attack with some other ship. When the shield symbol is gone move your troop ship.
How good are your troops, how good are his? You get to see the numbers when the fight starts, based on this you can change your tactics. And you can use the number for future attack plans.
I am not able to predict the numbers.

Reading your message again.
Do not always trust autopilot, troop ships I normally move in manually, just by the keyboard.
