Random events

I keep on reading about negative, posetive and "unbalancing" events.

The problem is that I have been playing the game for 5 days almost nonstop ;) but other than the events you get when colonizing planets, no random events have ever occured.

Just what ARE theese events everyone is talking about? When do they happen? Do I have to enable them somehow?
I play at Intelligence level.

Some of them don't appear until later in the game... if you're playing on smaller maps, maybe you won't see them. A few examples (not all, or it'd ruin your fun): the I-League, the Fundamentalists, the Prison breakout, the Space Shark, the Draginol...

I see,

Well, I always play only at medium sized galaxies.
(I hate the micromanagement of units on large maps)
Maybe that explanis it.

I lost a game big time because of the Fundies :sniff!: Took all of my good systems. Claimed I was Evil. I wasn't. Really. Well, maybe a little. OK, maybe a lot. OK, was Pure Evil Incarnate.

Just got a "random event" - it boosted my influence I think.
Too bad that won't stop the Drengins from "liking my skin" and their transporters from invading me in a few turns :sniff!:

Try getting "evil" yourself in the next game, the Drengin will love you (and your skin) :D

What is the draginol. I was down to whomping the Drengin (my dreads to his battle-cruisers) to end the game and they got it. Now I am in negative cash even though my economics show large positive cash flow. My morale has plummeted to 20 from 60 Where it was for most of the game (taxes at 20%). All in a few turns. Is this related or what?

Draginol, Space Sharks, Galactic Prison: these events challenge your Strategic intellect to the limit. Look at it like that. Don't worry if you loose a game, learn from it ;) And play the next one.

I've had a few games ruined by nasty events at the start or early in the game. Like Space Sharks, Prison Break, Space Sharks, Prison Break, Space Sharks, Prison Break (back to back, exactly like that, while I, Mr. Tech Lead, had just gotten Corvettes. Whee!).

Random events tend to ruin TBS games, rather then improve them.

Lately, it hasn't been that nasty, but nothing worse then a string of bad luck that wipes out every game you start one evening. Where's the fun in that?

I refuse to have the Funds take all my star systems save one, I always revert back to an auto save should they take more than 1/3 of my systems.

Don't agree. It makes the games spicy. And fortunately Galciv comes with random events that can either benefit or harm you, unlike most strategy games that have only harmful random events.

So I guess I'm hosed :)

I have now lost 3 straight at normal. Live and learn but I always turn off random events or put them to rare if I can ;)

Freya, I guess will will just have to agree to disagree then. Even though you are wrong... ;)

Random events tend to destabilize a game. When you are significantly ahead, you can usually take a random event hit, and it won't mess with you too much. Just 'spice' the game play slightly. Unless it is something particularly nasty, of course. Like your enemy finding 86 Battle Cruisers when everyone just has Star Fighter tech. ;)

From a 'Make all customers happy' point of view, simply giving us a switch at game setup to enable or disable random events would allow everyone to pick and choose. And trust me, I'm really looking for that switch when I've just had a fantastic start ruined by space sharks or pirates showing up in my home sector and destroying everything slow that can be launched. And I think it a serious cheese to lead such things deep into my enemy's territory to let it destroy their stuff. Doesn't add to my enjoyment of the game. Doesn't even add to the challenge. Just ruins my fun.

Yes, that is an option. Like in Moo2. But personally I have never switched off Random Events in MOO2, because it made the game more interesting to me. Anyway, if people feel it should be possible, sure, make it possible.

I was one of the frothers that complained about game ending random events when I first started playing. However, some of them WERE NOT game ending, they just made the game tougher. I tended to lump them all together as game killers. And now that I've updated the game with the download, there are fewer of them (at least in the games I've played so far.) If I do get one that really wrecks things for me I guess I'll just quit and start a new game if I dont want the hassle.
I am reformed.

1.02 is much better. Before, the sharks and other events would just wipe me the F out before I had a chance to roll. To me, that was no fun. Actually, it was a game killer. Stardock responded quickly, and now after patching, those events still happen, but only much later when there's a chance to deal with it. So far, I think the balance is much, much improved.

actually, the space sharks have HELPED me in the game i'm playing now. I "led" two of them to the Arceans-whom I am going to declare war on just as soon as the sharks wipe out their fleets! Har! what a hoot, thanks to Jaws, their military is nearly gone AND the some of their planets are without orbiting ships so they's easy pickins, Jethro!!

"BYW, where does it say in the game which version you have?"

The general version number (1.0, 1.01, 1.02, etc.) is at the top of the in-game options menu. If you want to know the precise revision number, you have to use SDC. Go to Tools --> Settings and check "Show Application Revisions". Then the GalCiv entry in the Software section will tell you exactly what version you're using.

Before Brad toned them down in one of the first patches, I agreed. But now they seem fine to me. You'd don't get nasty ones early, and you don't get some of the really bad ones at all on lower difficulty levels.

Personally I'd like to see (many) more events. I play many games without a single random other than when I land on a planet. Consequently I seldomly get past "neutral".

So a slider to select random events (from none to everyday) would be very welcome.

Yeah, I agree- there's not enough random events in my games either- hardly any in fact even when I do land on planets. I think it's all relative to what you want and expect- taste.

The events are good for the most part, IMO. I think two are unbalanced, or can be, though. The one where every planet around one star gets boosted by like 15 class levels, and the one where you find ass loads of good ships.

I agree (again), there aren't enough random events. Especially after colonization. I've played 5 games, never seen the mass ship findings, or the other game enders. Only colonization RE and ones after (only in the Sol system though). I need more RE!!! Or just see a few ;p .

"I've played 5 games"

What difficulty level? One of the first patches introduced restrictions on REs that prevent some from appearing early in the game, and some from appearing at all on low difficulty levels.
