How my merchant Marine Fleet defeated the Highest AI

The UP voted to not allow the destruction of frieghters. I had 4 sectors together on a huge map, the mushroom head aliens had 3/4 the rest of the map. I surrounded my starbase with frieghters and put one in orbit of each planet. The computer could not get to my starbase or planets because of the ban on attacking them. I was slowey able to move ships escorted by frieghters where ever i wanted...eventually starbases with mil upgrades were built to counter the mushroom head allien weapons advantage and i was able to take them sector by sector. This took some time....but what the heck.

Quit the UP..naw not a good idea..you cant trade without the UP, so thats at least half your monthly income gone. Plus other civs tend to hate you more.

I wouldnt say the AI is flawed..i mean its not really the most viable and predictable strat is it ;)

If the UP prevents you from conquering the last bastion of hope in a Galaxy, then it would make sense to leave the UP. Especially considering the fact that once you take out those four sectors there is no more UP. Plus if a UP resolution is your down fall, when without it you would rule, I'd drop them in a instant. And finally, considering the facts presented there probably wasn't a lot of revenue coming from trade.

Ewww... cheesy. Could be stopped by simply ignoring freighters in a stack when attacking. Ignore frieghters (and other zero-attack ships) when invading a planet. Yay!

Yeah that would be a pretty goode fix.

Can you specify which ship you want to attack in a fleet? Something is tugging at my gut and telling me no..

Nope, you can't specify... and it seems it may be based on ATT+DEF (ie highest sum defends). I had an "unfortunate" outcome where 12 battleships and a major starbase was completely ignored, the AI ships instead attacked the anti-matter missiles in the stack. Made me rather unhappy as the missiles are rather expensive and should have been held in reserve for use against enemy dreadnoughts.
