Question to all..When setting up, what do you take away most often in order to..

add different racial abilities? I'm having a bear of a time deciding what to reduce, unless I've been brainwashed into believing 20% influence and so on, in the default is best. Just looking for what people have changed and how it affected their gameplay!
Thanks,
Doc

You mean from what the game has set when you first play? AFAIK, what is already set is just whatever was used in your last game (or Brad's last game before the build was released, if it's your first game). It's not meant to be a "recommended" bunch of settings.

For my first game, I just hit "Reset" to blank all the picks, and chose my own. I don't even know what the 'default' settings are/were.

I make sure all my picks reflect the victory type/play style I have in mind for the game. Going into a game aiming for a military victory w/o taking HP/Weapons/Defence bonuses is just silly, for instance.

That said (I forgot to actually ANSWER the question, sorry... need an Edit function :p), I usually take +20 Economics however I'm playing, since money is always useful. My other picks are either research, influence, diplomacy, or weapons/defence depending on which victory condition I want. I don't use the Planet Quality pick since it's too expensive, and some of the more obscure ones just don't have enough obvious effect to make me happy with them.

It depends on your style of gameplay, however I find that PQ is almost too-powerful, as it influences so much about the game.

I am also a fan of +econ and +military production (for constructors and early expansion).

Just think about what kind of strategy you want to pursue and pick the traits that follow along those lines. If you are going to be a trading king, pick diplomacy, economics and maybe trade routes.

If you are playing on a huge scattered map, pick range/speed if expansion is important to you.

Remember too that resources in game give you bonuses if you mine them and your scout ship can find bonuses for you too!

Try everything out! That is what this game is developed for, indeed the 5th X: Xperience. :)

While I am going to try PQ out in my next game, I am going to stick with +econ for my other games. It is a very handy attribute and I have added sensor to make it easier to find and see stuff. :) I forgot what my third one is. I do agree with the above posters, pick the bonus points in accordance with your strategy.
