Trade Goods Monopoly?

Why do you get the message about a trade good being a monopoly when it is completed by another race? Um.. is it? I've not noticed. I was studying diplomatic translators, and I swear that 1 MONTH before I completed it, another race did (jerks), and it was no longer being researched. Is this true? Can you still get it? Or was I simply losing my mind because it was like, 2 am?

And if this is the case.. why can other races get these monopoly trade goods AFTER you do? Any know? Thanks!

Finally, can a race that you trade a trade good to freely trade that to other races? It would be neat if they could not. Is that what they mean by distribution? Only YOU can trade it to other races, but it can still be researched?

It's the same bug that's been around for several versions now. Trade Goods and Galactic Achievements aren't properly removed from build queues after someone else finishes them, so you frequently see more than one (sometimes several) of each good built.

"Finally, can a race that you trade a trade good to freely trade that to other races?"

No, they can't. Only the owner of the good can license it.

there's been a lot of threads on this topic...the documentation really needs to be more clear.

from my experience the following applies to trade goods:

1. only one civilization can "build" them as a social improvement. they then have a monopoly on the good. if the AI is building the trade good after you've already built it, then it's a bug.

2. you can sell/trade the good to other civs. if you do, they will get the "benefits" of the good but will NOT be able to trade it to anyone else. so you can sell/trade the good to every single civ. this makes trade goods incredibly valuable, especially in the early game where they can support your entire economy.

things that would be nice additions:

1. a screen that showed you which trade goods that a) you "owned" and b) you "purchased" from another civ.

2. a similar screen for other civs.

3. conquering a planet that has built a trade good should transfer the monopoly to you.

cheers

Ok.. this is what I thought it was. And IMO, this should be a priority fix.. any strategy that revolves around trade goods becomes rather moot when anyone can make them after I do. :notsure:

I agree Horatio.. you should be able to differenciate between obtained and studied trade goods.

I dunno about the planet things.. if it is an important asset, perhaps they loaded those pieces of frictionless clothes on escape ships and made off with them. LOL

I guess I should read the bug forums more often Ash! I'm such a lamer.. (:(

Since I haven't opened the Bug Report thread in days, I'm hardly one to criticize. I just read most everything else posted around here FAR too much...

I agree this should be a priority fix. Not sure why it has been so hard for them to squash. They seem to have it where the player cant ever build a duplicate, but the AIs still do.

"Not sure why it has been so hard for them to squash."

Apparently it's been around for a LONG time. So I'm sure there must be something complicated about solving it that our uninitiated minds can't/haven't cottoned on to yet. :notsure:

Perhaps the problem isn't so much in detecting the problem as in what to do about it... you don't want your 99% complete tri-strontium aphrodisiac clothing going to waste, right?

Perhaps you should get 33% of the bonus, and no trading rights on the final product.

If its going to be removed properly from the build queue, hopefully after removing, it will also be included in the next game production report so we can assign the planet something else. Right now, I usually lose it from the queue if it was more than 1 month to completion, and then I have to go searching through the planet list for some planet with an empty queue. I don't think the goverenor takes over either if there is something that he could be assigning.

"I have to go searching through the planet list for some planet with an empty queue."

You can also sort the planet list by Social Project, which would put planets with nothing in their queues altogether at the bottom of the list, nice and easy to find. :)
